Holiday breakdown - due to DPF

Featured Replies

I was up in the Scottish Highlands last week on holiday, when my 07 40000 mile vRS diesel let me down. The 600 mile drive up from Reading to Skye was fine, but the next day later the emissions light came on and the engine sounded rough. It's done this before but then its gone out a few days later. Last time it was serviced I mentioned this but the garage but couldn't find anything amiss

A few days later while driving to Oban, the DPF and glow plug light also came on and the car lost at least 50% of its power. We stopped and called out the AA. The breakdown guy and diagnosed a faulty sensor (but didn't know where or why). The guy advised driving it any more and said it would have to go to a main dealer.

They couldn't find a dealer in Glasgow or Inverness that could look within the next few days, so they ended up taking the car all the way back to Reading!

I picked it up yesterday (having had to have hire car for rest of holiday and to get back). The dealer said it was a blocked DPF and the technician had manually cleared it. They tried to tell me about short journeys not allowing the DPF regeneration process to take place, but we'd driven over 650 miles in the last week with only a coupe of short trips to the shops when we were up in Skye, so that didn't really stack up. They also said the DPF light would come on first and then the emissions light, but in my case it happened the other way round.

Bit of a shame the breakdown company couldn't have done the manual DPF clearing thing themselves rather than having to get the dealer to do it - would have saved a lot of hassle.

Just though I'd share all that with you!

Cheers

Got to love DPF's. Worst thing to happen to diesels imho. Thankfully my current diesel doesn't have one. :)

You do know "manually clearing" the DPF usually means leaving it sitting for 10-15 minutes at 4000rpm, don't you? :thumbdwn:

I thought manual clearing is usually 2000 rpm, 4000 rpm is too high and it doesnt get hot enough to clear and the regen program doesn't activate.

Someone should tell the mechanics at work they're doing it wrong then, they do the Vectras and Octavias the same way.

I didn't know that, but suspected it would be something that simple. Just a shame the break down guy couldn't have done it!

Clearing the DPF when both the Engine emissions/pre-glow lamp and the DPF lamp lights up requires the use of the VAS workshop diagnostic tool. Just running it at 4000 rpm at standstill will only make things worse.

There is a DPF regeneration related software update on the BMN engine which solves the problem.

Hope you can get your car sorted!

Hello!

Last Monday emissions light came on. I red on forum about this problem mainly on Diesel engine but I have 1.6 MPI. And it didn't happen only to me but to several other fellows from www.vwforum.ro. Now I'm waiting for a mate with VAG to perform a scan and error removal.
