The problem is most likely to the aerial. There is a booster in th eaerial base which is powered by 12v through the coax cable. The aerial base corrodes or fails. Common problem on VAG models

So the HU monitors the amount of current taken by the aerial and switches it off if too much is drawn?

How long before the aerials normaly start to fail - mines not two years old yet!

Some have failed from new.

Any good dealer can resolve for you under warranty

what i would suggest, just pull the stereo out and make sure that the aerial is pushed in well. noticed after i had mine out for the bluetooth kit and mp3 lead that when i put all the ocnnectors back in including the aerial the radio signal improved (still not the best but better than before). so might be worth a try.
