strange tyre wear (again)

Featured Replies

I had to change my rear tyres as the inside edge of them were wearing badly at the end of last year.

If you run your hand around the tread on the inside edge, you can feel it going up and down. Almost as if the car is skipping along the road a bit.

This happened on the Yokohomas (sp) I had initially on the car, and now on a set of F452s that have been on since Christmas 2007. I changed my front and rear shocks (OEMs from GSF) about 16 months ago think they might have been the cause, but still I notice this wear is happening again - the ruining a set of tyres with otherwise plenty of tread on them.

Any ideas on what is going on?

Car is a 2001 TDi estate with a 133.5k on the clock It has been into several places for tracking checks / adjustments. I might see if I can take some pictures, but not really sure if the "problem" will be obvious in the pictures.

I once bought a Golf with odd lumps scattered around the tread of the back tyres: the rear shocks were worn out- it had 118k miles. It's really odd to look at. This was across the entire width though.

i have changed my rear shocks though... unless the "new" ones are knackered..... i know that one of the ones on thr front is starting to leak a bit :-(

Have you tried a bounce test?

not recently, granted. I'll give it a whirl tomorrow. I would have thought that knackered shocks would cause the wear across all the treat and not just the inside inch or so of the tread.

Me too, to be honest. How about an alignment check? Axle bushes perhaps?

I'm only wildly guessing, and it does sound very strange.

it has had several alignments checks since I changed the shocks. I might pop down and see my friendly mechanic and see what he has to say.

I had excessive wear on my falkens on the inside edge on all 4 tyres:eek:

Only had the tyres on 10 months so had to get some new tyres so chose the new type toyos..not cheap.

The car is running coilovers so i got a full digital alignment check as well as the coilovers checked when I got the tyres-everything was spot on..got the printouts to prove.

Still don't know what caused it but keeping a watchful eye on these tyres:D

It happened on tyres prior to the Falkens as well. Car used to have yokohomos on it, but one ended up with part of a beer bottle in it, so I put one a cheapish tyre till the other yoko was virtually worn out. When I took these off at Christmas one was virtually down to the canvas in places due to the irregular wear on the tyre.

What I noticed was the ride nice was getting louded in the back of the car. Initially I though the bearings might be knackered, but jacking the car up and doing the normal tests did not indicate so.

I am on my second set of f452s on the front, and they have worn ok - got about 35k from then, iirc :-).

I am sure it must be the car, rather than the rubber which is the causing the problem.... just not sure what to check.
