A303 Upgrade

Featured Replies

Those petitions are a waste of time IMO. Can't think of a single example where one of those petitions has changed anything.

Gets my vote.......

A303 was a good road before the straightened and duelled it.

going back a few years now.

Wish they would put a duel carriage way through stonehenge.:D

Well, the only dodgy areas are around the Hills just east of Honiton, name escapes me now. Can get slow through there. Most of the duelly bits are good once you get about 40 miles or so from Honiton. I prefer to use it if I were going to London simply because more goes on to keep you awake. Roundabouts can be fun too. :o

Anyway - which bit of the A303 does the petition apply. Very non-descript as in places it's perfectly fine as a trunk road.

Guess you missed this bit:

More details from petition creator

Between Amesbury’s Countess roundabout in Wiltshire and the Podimore roundabout in Somerset the A303 has 4 short sections of single carriageway. These sections cause severe congestion as the dual-carriageways converge into 1 lane. Furthermore, on 3 of the sections there are speed cameras at which drivers slow disproportionately, further exacerbating the congestion. In December 2007 the scheme to tunnel past Stonehenge was cancelled on cost grounds. Whilst there have been competing aspirations regarding this section it is now time for the Government to govern and direct the Department of Transport to upgrade the carriageway. The bottlenecks should be removed by constructing a flyover at the Countess roundabout; widening to dual carriageway at Stonehenge; removing the Wilton roundabout and bypassing the villages of Winterboune Stoke and Chicklade. This will improve traffic flow for industry and tourism whilst reducing atmospheric pollution and noise pollution in the villages.

What you say is true about the Blackdown Hills section. The sections above do cause bottlenecks and the Ilminster Bypass with it's alternating 2nd lane is a pain (it was far more interesting when it was a 'suicide' lane all the way through.

FYI, I travel the whole length of the 303 at least once a month each way and have for over 20 years, usually at least twice each month. It used to be great and quite un-policed but has sprouted both fixed and mobile cameras. What really annoys me is the fixed sites where every time traffic seems to slow to at least 10mph under the limit before passing.

When it's likely to be congested I bypass the whole of the section cited in the petition via a top secret route ;)

IMHO if it was continuous dual carriageway along the whole route it would be dull, yes in summer and peak times it can be a drag but it is never dull.

I'd far rater they just resurfaced the Honiton to Exeter (A30) section with something less noisy and more fuel efficient than the current surface, when they opened that bit I had a 1-litre Polo and you could feel the extra drag!

All that said, my two fastest (average speed/distance) trips were long before many of the current sections were in place, once on two wheels and once in a Porsche 928

Countess roundabout is always a pain, especially at this time of year with all the tourists. Far better alternative and more interesting routes to take around them there parts ;)
