frying bacon

Featured Replies

hi, my first post here.

we have a 99v tdi estate, bought from new and apart from a drivers window regulator and a brake light switch (both common i believe), it

keeps on going.

but there's a small but annoying problem with the gear lever.

when i,m accelerating there,s a sizzling noise, could it just be a worn bush or somthing.

it stops if you put your hand on the lever.

sounds like a loose nut or bolt, or a loose circlip or something.

Does it only buzz at certain revs, because this would tend to suggest what I've said...

(unless someone else knows better)

My old Vectra used to have a roof rattle at certain revs - it turned out to be the strengthening stuts inside the headlining rattling against the outer skin of the roof.

Take the gear lever gaiter off and have alook underneath to see if anything is loose or worn...

That sounds likely, or else it's one of the notorious exhaust mounting problems.

It could possibly be the button on the handbrake and you putting your hand on the gear lever is changing the vibration frequency.

That was fairly common on the MK I octy.

Also yes you can cook bacon on your exhaust manifold ;)

ISTR reading something about it being possible to shim out the HB button with a piece of plastic from an opaque washing up liquid bottle (because they're more flexible than the modern clear Fairy and Persil ones) cut to size.

I used platic from an entirely clear fizzy pop bottle for my HB rattle. A very unobtrusive, low-effort and therefore elegant fix.

On my octy I get a slight rattle from the gear kn0b when accelerating in 3rd.

Had the same on my Mk1 TDi but worked out to be a metal shield under the gear lever under car ratlting.

Welcome :)
