Only in Italy

Featured Replies

Was just having a quick fact finding mission for the upcoming road trip, based primarily on the fact that I had heard they where altering the speed limits.

Anyway came accross this:

Expressway speeds are reduced to 110 kph (68 mph) during the following: Saturday and Sunday, the Thursday before Easter through the Wednesday after, midweek national holidays, 20 December to 7 January, and from the Saturday before the second Sunday in July through the first Sunday in September.

Don't think it will effect us but anyone else planning on touring in Italy the next feww weeks, remember to fill in and check your diary

Also found this:

The middle lane of three-lane roads is for passing. Passing on the right is permitted when the driver ahead has signalled a left turn and has moved to the centre of the road or when multiple lanes are travelling in your direction. By the way, don't be surprised to find Italians paying remarkably little respect to lane definition. In other words, they drive all over the road.

Wonderfull counttry :D

You'll feel right at home :)

So what is the speed limit when it doesn't meet the above conditions?

Having been to a few places in Italy I think you'll find there are no speed limits, red lights, or individual lanes. Its great!!!! Sardinia has some of the best roads I've been on.

So what is the speed limit when it doesn't meet the above conditions?

Her is my top tip for Italy -dont try and predict what the other driver is going to do - they dont even know themselves.

Practise offensive - not defensive driving, or you will make no progress at all.

If someone flashes you - do not take that as a "you can go" message.... they will crash into you.

Lastly - take out your brain and put it somewhere safe until you leave Italy.

I have done thousands of miles in Italy, and it's not that bad in fairness. Just in the busy cities... then watch out :)

I think France is as bad as Italy but generally my opinion is the further south you go the worse the driving gets.

I found France and Belgium to be equally as appalling. I've not been to Italy though.
