Glovebox

Featured Replies

While cleaning out my glovebox today i wondered why it is called a glove box as i have never carried a pair of gloves there in any of the cars ive owned..... and does anyone here carry gloves there.....

I do, a present from the wife but I never wear gloves at all :)

i actually carry a pair of gloves in my drivers side door sill ! seriously :D

Like a lot of these terms it's a "hangover" from the early days of open cars, when your "driving gloves" were a set of elbow-length leather gauntlets.

Similarly, the "dashboard" is the sloped panel the front passenger rests their feet on (from horse-drawn vehicles), not the hunk of plastic the instruments, glove box and heater controls are built into, which is the "facia".

Interesting.

On similar lines I can see why the wings & bumpers are so called but why bonnet, boot & scuttle?
