USB sockets?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I had hoped to get a brand-new Fabia 2 when I get my car, which I expect to be in January 2009. However I lost the job a while back which would have secured me £1560 (15%) off the cost of the car. Which is a bl**** a***.

So now I hope to get a new version Fabia but secondhand. Preferably a Fabia 2, either 1.2L or 1.4L.

However, I think I am right in recalling that these cars have a socket fitted which is supposed to be for MP3 players & IPods. Which gives me a problem because my MP3 player - my watch - has a USB socket and that, of course, will not work in the car.

Does anyone know if it is possible to either:

a) get a USB socket fitted in addition to the provided IPod socket?

or

B) get a USB socket fitted in place of the IPod socket?

Or is there no need to do either?

Cheers.

Nice one. Cheers. Cahn you still keep the original radio though or does that have to be changed as well?

is the input in the car not just a standard audio line-in jack?

you would just need a cable to run from the headphone jack on ur mp3 watch to the car..?

Don't know about the Fabia radio, if its a stream or stream mp3 it will have a connection for a cd multichanger? if so the unit just plugs into the cd changer socket, you lose the use of the cd changer, but you can buy another piece of kit to get around this......:rock_band

Yep, sure it is too :)

Perhaps it is, and I did get a lead which would do the trick on my Dad's car. The fun with that in turn was that it would only play in mono on a system with stereo speakers. But that car was a 'K' plate 1.8L Ford Escort estate and the Mp3 player didn't connect to the car stereo directly as I had a tape-type adapter.

Now he has a Peugeot 307 ('06' plate) with no tape deck and I can't play my Mp3s on it.

The MP3 input in the Fabia is a simple audio jack connection. You can connect a cable from the headphone socket to the car using a 3.5mm jack and as long as you set the input to Aux3, it will work. The better option is to get a proper line-out quality connection. I use an Ipod Nano and have a cable that plugs into the connector at the bottom of the iPod and gives me lineout quality sound.

Another option of course is to use one of FM radio transmitter things. Tried on in my husband's Astra and that was sort of successful but not as good as a direct cable link.

have you not got a headphone socket on your watch then?

Yes. It is an interesting piece which was made in China. Aside from being a watch (of course) and an MP3 player it also has a microphone and a flash-drive to store said MP3s on. The capacity of the drive is 256MB and the sound quality is very good. Just dug this picture off the net:

Just under the button at the bottom left is a plug: that is the headphone socket. The three small holes to the right of the headphone socket are a microphone (useful for recording what your mates are saying and then possibly embarassing them with it later: have done that a few times! :D).

The three buttons on the left, top to bottom are On/Off/Mode, Play/Pause and Delete but the On/Off button also acts to change the style of sound (which rotates normal -> pop -> rock -> jazz -> classic -> normal). The top button on the right is for changing to the next track and turning the volume up: the button on the bottom right is for going back to the start of the current track or turning the volume down.

Just above the face it says MP3: above that you can see where the cable for the USB comes out. This curves round with the strap and tucks in under the buckle where the strap does up.

Cost me £100 from Gadget Shop which, unfortunately, is now not in existance. But the watch has never given me any problems. I replaced the watch battery for the first time about 2 weeks ago. The MP3 bit, however, has a separate battery and this recharges when you connect the watch to a computer.

Laughably, my Dad condemmed my purchase of this watch as a waste of cash. He got rid of that oppinion ages ago.

The advantage of having a USB socket in the car is that I would be able to play some of the music I have on the watch - done of which is on CD - over the stereo in the car.

So what's the problem with using the appropriate audio cable and plugging it into the aux socket in the car? To be absolutely clear, this would be a case of using a plug to plug cable, plugging one end into the headphone socket on the watch and the other into the aux socket in the car. Just like you do with any other music player...

Will be a sod with a wire connected to your wrist though :)

Quite. Also:

a) I haven't got the cable: the only thing I have that would connect my watch to the car radio has a casette on the end of it. And I got that with a portable CD player.

B) In respect of vRSLen's comment, I would have to take one hand off the wheel, and my eyes off the road, to change the track.

Leads cost naff all, even maplins wouldn't break the bank.

As for changing track / looking away, you would have to do this with any mp3 player, even if controlled from the head unit - just remember where the buttons are on the watch so u don't need to look

Yes, but whether using a cable plugged into the headphone socket or a USB cable the problem will be exactly the same. It's a cable, either way!

can always take the watch off too ;)
