Vrs discs and pads

Featured Replies

i've noticed there is quite alot of rust around the edges of my brake discs...particularly on the rear. Probably need changing. Slight noise when breaking.

Anyone know any online places i can buy genuine skoda discs and pads? do i need new anti rattle clips?

I'd need to see them, but a ring of rust around the swept area of a disc is entirely normal.

Also, what sort of noise to the brakes make? A sharp squealing sound is usually indicative of a need for some Copaslip on the backplates. Grinding noises usually mean new pads and/or discs.

As Ken says, a 'ring' of rust around the very edge is normal. If the rusty bits start to flake (as happened with my last set of OEM), then they will need need to be replaced. German, Swedish and French are the usual supplier of choice for this sort of thing!

yes it is a grinding sound. Not that loud...but its definately there.

In which case, if there's ingrained rust on the swept areas of the discs, you need new discs and pads. If it grinds once, then not again, check the discs part-way through the trip, and they'll probably be clean. Save your money unless the pads are worn out.

if it's any help, I got new discs and pads (genuine Mintex) off Ebay for a good price.

I have the ebay mintex set on my car and are as good as OEM.

Mine are rusty, but previously as said above once they flake they need changing.

Also try a local motor factors they may be cheaper than ebay

You mentioned that it is mainly the rears. Don't forget that the rear brakes do very little on the fabia (assuming it is a fab here!) and so are prone to corrode. Mine grind at the rear if it left for anything longer than a day (less if it's wet). The grinding soon wears off though. What I tend to do is drive 100 yards or so with handbrake partially on and this gets rid of surface rust and the noise.

On the other hand though your brakes maybe fecked - in which case ignore me!! :D

thanks everyone for your help on this. And yes it is a Fabia vrs.

I phoned up GSF parts yesterday and they gave me the part numbers and prices...and said the discs and pads on the fab vrs are the same as the VW polo.

The grinding does seem to go away so will assume its surface rust. Their are very small almost hairline cracks on the edges of the discs.

whatever discs/pads i buy do they have to match the fronts...i.e. in terms of brand or type?

They probably wont be hairline cracks. What usually happens is the pad sticks to the disc when you allpy the handbrake and the brakes are hot and it leaves an outline of the pads on the disc.

Ross, I've seen hairline cracks in the edge rust on discs before.

Newskoda, that edge rust isn't structural to the discs, so rusting there isn't a problem. Also, you need to match discs and pads on an axle, but all Octys (at least AFAIK) have 4-channel anti-lock, so sort out minor differences for themselves. Also, as regards disc type, you've already got a mismatch on most models, with the frons being ventilated and the rears solid.

He might well have. Just have a lot of people panic and say they have cracked discs and they dont. Be pretty unusual on the back of a Fabia as they do chuff all.
