speed camera detector

I don't really know where to put this thread, so here it is

Is there any speed camera detectors that can be permanently fixed i.e. non dashboard..if so, which ones, and how good are they

I think you'd have to retro fit the sat nav and get the speed camera updates but I am sure someone will be able to better advise.

I use a Road Pilot Micro-Go which is very good.

And don't forget the good old PocketGPSworld

Pocket GPS World - SatNavs, GPS & Speed Cameras - Speed Camera Download

all you have to do to get free life updates is to send in a speed camera location - it doesn't have to be a fixed camera, just any spot you see where the cops use regularly ( I sent in my old folks driveway in Buxton )

Or don't break speed limits, easy one that one.

and that is the exact reason why there are so many false alerts on the PGPSW database.

Where cops sit IS NOT a speed camera. If you actively see them out of their car and pointing a lasar/radar gun down the road then yes, definatley. If you see them with the windows wound up (cant use a radar/lasar gun through glass) eating doghnuts then its not.

Also, your folks driveway in Buxton is not going to be a point is it. So, shall we all add our addresses to it to slow people down?

Luckily, all the submissions are supposed to be verified by a PGPSW staff before inclusion.

On a seperate note, if you can get a device that fits inside the cubby box on the dash, it will work with the lid shut. Maybe a snooper evolution or raod angel, they either come with a direct connection lead or one is available as an option.

problem is you got to wait for another member to verify the position after its gone up to get the free sub, no one seems to do that once its been added to the database as ive submitted about 30 to them and no one else has verified them apart from the veriffiers which doesnt count.

have you not seen the section on pocket gps world for pMOBILE cameras

ALL MY CAMERAS SUBMITTED HAVE BEEN VERIFIED :finger:

and the next time the cops stands with his radar gun at the top of my folks drive I will take his photo for you :finger:

What are the pMobile files?

The pMobile files were added as an extra set of warnings so that you could be aware of places that may have a mobile camera in place. They are sites that have been submitted but not yet been added to the main database They have not been checked for accuracy, nor have they been visited by any verifiers for the feasibility. It would be of benefit if you could report, via the submissions page, whether you have seen the site in use or any other information that may help verify or remove the pending site.

According to a news report in late June hand held radar guns cannot now be used as they give false readings, it was shown on breakfast TV

They had a stationary bike and a car doing 40 on a test track and the device clocked the bike, the same test was conducted using the bike and the car was clocked.

The association of chief constables and the Scottish ones have said they will now have to withdraw the laser guns from use.

If you have been stopped by the traffic using one of the laser guns fight it

but then we had this a while back when the daily mail reported how dodgy the lti20/20 lazer gun was, clocking a wall at running speed being one of many inaccurates.

i have a road angel compact that has saved my licence many times i also have the laser detecter on top cannot fault this and still at a good price.

im using a talex, couldnt fault it on saturday through sussex, hampshire, kent, berkshire and oxfordshire. also doesnt look worth nicking either when its on the dashboard.

fitted my roadpilot yesterday , its in the lower corner , the only problem with them is they need too have the adapter to lower the volts to 5 so need a cigarette lighter.

i bought 1 of ebay with an inline fuse and fitted in the space behind the fuse box , took a feed from the spare fuse and earthed it to the bolt holding the dash.

works fine and the connection will also work my sat nav.

I have a TomTom with a subscription to the safety () cameras.

Works pretty well but is slow to add updates. I have reported a new camera on Kirkstall Road going into Leeds 3 times and it still doesn't appear on the database.

BTW, those of you with the radar or laser detectors - if you leave the UK then leave it at home. They are illegal throughout most of Europe with a hefty on the spot fine just for having one even if it is switched off and in the boot!

No need for that at all my friend.

So if cops do stand on your folks drive, then fair do's its a valid location but you didnt explain that in your post but my apologies anyway.

There has been though, several posts on the PGPSW forum from members who have that very same concern....... that some people could "nobble" the validity of the database by adding points that simply are not valid.

I quite often pass locations for mobile vans that simply could not exist as there is no parking etc, I can only assume that someone in the days before every camera had to be verified has added it to slow unfamiliar drivers down.

I also see locations where cop cars sit, which to be honest I dont think should be in the database, or at least moved to their own section so that a user can choose to have them or not.

Why do I say this? Cos the general public dont know what types of police car have what equipment and who are likly to nick you for speeding and those that cant or wont. For instance, how many people do you see slowing down for the traffic wombles and then speed up once passed? If they dont know the difference between them and Traf pol, then knowing which ones carry vascar/laser/radar is pretty slim. Yet these people will see a local police car sitting and add that as a location. They even bloody add the flashing slow down signs that we see all over the UK.

Anyway, off topic rant over, lol

PGPSW database still has my vote though, and it has got much better in recent years and no doubt will get even better in months/years to come.

Cheers for apology, I apologise for the :finger:

I know - I didn't explain ALL in my first post :o

the cops stand at the top of the folks drive with a tripod camera and my daft old mum takes em cups of tea - but my dad sticks the "V"s up at em LOL

I was actually one of the originals on pocket gps 5 years ago when it was all free (I do agree why they charge now) with my in-car pc in those days.

Hey I know what you mean about the false claims on PGPSW

But I'm always around your way in "The Kingdom" in Leven and wow there are always those vans on that A92

:offtopic: Sorry

Cheers anyway

Tried PGPSW DB on a mates device, and it was so out of date it was unreal.

I use the POIpoint DBs through checkpoint (you can get them without checkpoint), and they are updated constantly. I added 5 locations one day, and they showed up on the next day's sync.

Thanks for all the replies, keep them coming..i've got a kenwood 7220 installed, which has the garmin sat nav ..however, their speed camera update isn't compatible with my system !!! how daft is that !!

My main concern is for hand held lasers etc..now that my baby is getting run in, i want to open her up a bit..purely within the speed limits of course ..i don't want something that tells me where handhelds are normally situated, is it possible to get a system that actually picks up laser etc signals or whatever they are?
