Weird damage!

Featured Replies

Well....was driving along the other day and heard a massive crack noise from the right rear. Realised fairly quickly it wasn't a blow out and car felt fine, so put it down to something on the road. When I stopped, I had a look around, but couldn't see anything so figured all was ok.....that was until someone else pointed out an odd dent just behind the fuel filler.

Upon closer inspection, I found a rather large hole in my wheel arch liner which must have been caused by a stone flying out of the tyre and punching through it! This had then continued up into the arch and impacted the body just behind the fuel filler causing a small outward facing dent! It has to be one of the most bizarre causes of damage I've ever had on a car.

So....anyone else had anything strange happen?

that must of been some big f*** off stone you went over!!

Well that's the thing. It can't have been! There was nothing in the road and I didn't feel a bump or anything. I get the impression it was stuck in the tread. The dent looks to have been made by a small stone too so my guess is a very small stone! Will take some photos of the offending dent and hole later. I'm in two minds whether to bother patching it up too. Do you think it would be worth preventing the worst of the road spray disappearing into the arch? I could either find a new one in a scrappy I guess or just put some rubber gasket material over it......or duct tape :P

Duck tape should do it,id rather not have a hole in it if it was me especially when winters only round the corner

Unlucky matey, get it patched up :)

I can't believe a stone would go through the arch liner?

Are you sure someone wasn't taking a pot shot at you and it ricochetted?

See if you can recover the 'object' from inside the arch liner.

I did actually fail to mention it happened at 135mph on the Autobahn (this is not my way of saying 'private road' or some other such balls. It genuinely was on the Autobahn between Frankfurt and Hockeneheim!) so the stone would have a fair bit of velocity :P Will probably have a look around and duct tape the offending hole up for the time being.

135 mph

At that speed a stone certainly would be a lethal weapon to do that damage.

Hope you sort it out

Yeah it'll get sorted. I managed to get 145 on the clock on the way back from Berlin. Was pretty good at that speed although felt like it had hit a brick wall at about 140.

Even so, was still mighty impressed a stone could do such damage!

Well at that speed, who knows!

Not massively weird but I was a bit suprised to find this-

Nice! Where on earth did that come from?

LOL. Now that is weird. I take it no one ever got the bottom of that one then?!

Nice! Where on earth did that come from?

Well... that same day a car infront of me had a blowout on the dual carriage way so maybe it was the culprit of his blowout?

Quite lucky it didn't go through the rad or screen I guess
