Thinking about getting something a little newer and more poke.

Want a diesel and have been considering a Pug 306 2.0 HDi.

We've already got a 306 1.9 N/A diesel and its a good car.

Looking at the Meridian spec which includes leccy windows, remote locking, alarm, imobiliser, half leather seats, A/C and auto lights/ rain sensing wipers (i think).

A typical example is this one:

PEUGEOT 306 MERIDIAN 2.0 HDI (90), 2001, MAY PX on eBay, also, Peugeot, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 19-Sep-08 19:52:25 BST)

Thanks in advance.

Phil

Sorry, wouldn't touch a Pug again if you paid me :(

Why not a Fabia or mk1 Octy TDi. Should find a few good priced ones. Probably out last the Pug too.

I'd rather have any VAG car.

You could always invest in a Llama to carry around your belongings, should get good mpg....lol

The reason i was looking at this one is because of my price range/limit.

All VAG cars about within my £2000 limit are either very low spec or very high mileage or both!

Why do you hate them so much? Bad experiences with them?

Phil

306 is one of the better pugs IMHO and the hdi engines are cracking. Is the Meridian one with the half leather interior??

A 306 is about as new as I'd go, but they're good wee cars.

High mileage isn't necessarily a bad thing if well maintained. Saw an article in car mechanics about buying an Octavia 1.9tdi ex taxi with something like 200k miles on the clock at an auction for £2k, think they said book price was about £4.5k but because of the high-mileage the auction sale price was low - and the writers thought it was a bargain. The article showed pics of the boot showing how immaculate it was (they thought the previous owner put a cover in it to keep it good). I guess getting those sort of bargains takes time and effort though.

steer clear of ex-taxi's, having a high mileage doesn't necessarily mean they are well maintained, the major taxi leasing agents/owners only get rid of them if they are knackered

Just noticed what insurance group those octy's are in... for the black 1.9tdi on... group 11!!

My felicia is only group 4 and the pug is group 5... i will be paying £300 for the felicia come october and £400 is what i've been quoted for the pug.

I'm trying to think of costs... i don't want a good drivers car so to speak... just a good car... and the peugeot seemed to tick all my boxes in regards to spec, performance and affordability.

And with us already having a Pug 306 and knowing a little about them it seemed to make sense.

Btw... the current pug is a 98 ® with 55k on the clock (just had its first cambelt change).

The only issue i have with peoples feedback in regard to this sort of thing is that it usually seems irational... and yes of course put the 306 next to a Fabia vRS or similar i know which i would choose money etc no object... but unfortunately money is an object!

Its either this or i spend a grand on the felicia and do it up (mechanically and aesthetically).

Thanks for the feedback.

TBH you might be pleasantly surprised at the cost of insurance for the Octy's. The newer cars will be harder to steal and sell parts on, etc. Often they will have immobilsers/alarms which will help on any insurance quote.

Or even look for a Mk1 Fabia estate TDi, they'll have a lower insurance group.

Good luck in your search.

I don't hate them, just don't actually like them. The last one I drove was a newish mid-range 206, and I can honestly say a base model Polo/Fabia/Fox was much better.

They might have a head gasket problem with it- they have just changed the oild cooler in the hope that has failed. More in next month's issue.

On the insurance, you might be very surprised. I changed a Sept 95 ZX 1.4 (gp5) for a Sept 97 Xantia XUDT19 (gp 9 IIRC), following rolling the ZX. My insurance premium went down, on a newer, faster and more expensive car.

:iagree:You'd be surprised about the insurance, when I swapped my '96, 1.4 gutless Astra for the newer, faster, higher spec, higher insurance group '04 vRS my insurance decreased by just over £100!

The 306 XUDt is better for cheap running as it was a proven and simple engine design and all mechanical. The Dturbo (91bhp) and all the other XUDt's were also only group 5 insurance and cheap as chips.

Very cheap to get a 306 SLdt sedan or other sedan (saloon) spec.

Also very cheap (sub 1k) to pick up an XUDt in pretty good nick.

Failing that if you find a 1.9 XUDt car with a knackered engine and a 405/406 with a 2.1 XUDt they can be made to fit without much effort at all. :D

Im after something a bit newer than the older 306's tbh... hence why i came across the 2.0HDi ones... as you can get hold of a 2000/2001 model with decent mileage for under 2k.

Fair enough but you could still get the XUDt versions until 2001 IIRC and there was a lot more to go wrong on a HDI or other modern derv engine. That plus the cost of parts such as injectors and fuel pumps is a lot more for a HDI over an XUDt.

The XUDt has an extra 1 bhp too or if you squeeze the 2.1 in it's 110bhp plus a fuel pump play for more. :P

As a serious point however the XUDt was well tested at that point and the HDI was new and drove like a petrol engine rather than a derv with a big torque hit.

If you're sure you want something newer, I'd avoid the very early HDI's just like I'd avoid the very early PD engines etc.

Were the XUs the ones where you could alter the spring tension in the wastegate actuator to increase maximum boost?

You might think that; I could not possibly comment.

If you like the drive of the 306 take a look at the sxara, as far as I'm aware they are the same underneath and it just the body thats different. I loved my sxara tdi and the best part was, it was cheaper to buy than the 306. If looking at the sxara look for the exclusive model.
