its a dell 1520 inspiron. the recovery stored on drive d: doesnt seem to have an obvious way to run. ive been through the back up and restore menu and it says that there isnt a way of running it even through it is sat there. have a feeling im gonna have to get the box down from the loft to see what discs are in it.

I don't often deal with Dells, but there might well be a disc in your starter pack, to get things moving.

If not, give Dell a ring.

The disk should help, if not does the machine say something like "hit f10 for recovery" when booting up

Be VERY careful with manufacturers recovery disks.

They will almost certainly wipe all data from the machine, and install only the OS and essential drivers for the original fitted hardware.

i used an external back up drive to save all my important stuff, took note of what programs i had installed and saved it all and copied it all back once done. just need to find a couple of registration codes but no great hurry as i mainly use it for talex update, facebook and here and email.
