How to remove window carrier

Featured Replies

Hello,

The drivers door window dropped out on me the other day and i've been struggling to get it back up again. I've now managed to detatch the glass from the carrier and tape it up, so at least the car is weather proof.:)

I'm now stuck on how to get the carrier out. So far I've removed the door card, discnnected all the cabeling and undone all the bolts from the panel and now i'm stuck.

I think I need to disconnect the exterior door handle and lock. Can any one confirm this?

If so, what size star bit do I need? The screw (lock cylinder locking screw?) looks like it has a six pointed hole in it (star bit?) but all my matching bits need an adapter to be long enough to reach the screw and the adapter won't fit through the hole. So I need to go and buy one and want to make sure I get the right size.

Do I also need to unscrew the screws holding the door lock in place? These look like a bigger screw on the door edge with more than six points to the hole. If I do need to remove them, any ideas on what tool I need and what size?

Cheers,

Mike

You dont have to remove the door lock, just poke out the three black rivets at the back of the carrier.

It looks like the the section that is held in by the black rivets has already broken off anyway. The carrier still seems to be snagging on something near the lock though. I think the door lock (vertical plastic pin connected to a metal coat hanger peice of wire) goes up in that direction and I didn't know if that was causing the snag.

You reckon the carrier should come out if just the three black rivits are removed? Is diriiling the best option?

Ok,

I've got the carrier out without removing the door lock, which is lucky as I don't have a twelve point spline tool thingy to undo the screws.

The fault was as suspected. One of the guides that run up and down the carrier had snapped when the cble got pulled through it. The reason I couldn't move the window before was because the other guide was still attached and the motor is either really stiff or seized.

The next step is to rewire the door so I can use it untill I can get a replacement.

Speaking of which, any tips on whereto get a replacement from?

NSF window reg went on SWMBO's furby at the weekend. Sounded like a bullet going off in the cabin. I'm checking to see if a replacement is available in the aftermarket. Can someone confirm the part no as: 6Y1 837 462? I've checked that on vagcat and it says left side regulator - however I've cross referred the number on tecdoc and it's showing that oe no. as the right hand regulator... I think Valeo make a replacement - loathe to go down the route of fitting a low quality one though.... Main dealer price for reg plus fitting is £221!

I'm sure I got one for a Mk4 Golf for £40 from the dealers... Fabia one should be in the same ball park

£61 + vat! Mercedes ones are cheaper... :thumbdwn:

Jesus! :(

Checking with some VW dealers to see if they're any cheaper.

Main dealer quoted me £71.98 the other day .

There was a big problem with the Mk4 Golf ones breaking. VW redesigned them prior to a major recall in the States (brought on by a class lawsuit). VW UK said there was nowt wrong with them and refused to change unless under warranty - that could be why they're priced as they are.

Just got the invoice for my Octy....

Total: £116.45

Parts: £39.71

Yeah it's all Mk4 Golf platform cars, my local VW dealer is fairly poor at keeping stuff in stock, but they had 5 window regulators in!

SWMBO should've bought an octy! :D Got someone to fit a regulator for me when I get round to buying it.

Got the window reg today. Now I know why it's so expensive - it comes fitted on the door ancillaries carrier - OP take note, no need to remove the old mechanism from the carrier. Looks like the seal on it is pretty good too, so hopefully that will be one less leaky door to worry about. :D

OP still lurking...

Now i've had time to inspect the thing I took out I can see that it is just one of the plastic bits that runs up and down the guides that has snapped. The cables, pullys, guides, etc. all appear ok. I haven't tested the motor since taking it out, but it was still working after the window had dropped.

If I want a replacement for the broken plastic part, what do i need to order? I hear terms such as carrier, regulator, etc. banded around but all I have is a Haynes manual which makes no reference to the part I want to change. I see from other threads that I won't be able to buy just the part I require, so what do I need to look for?

Did you buy your replacement regulator from a skoda parts supplier or a breakers yard?

Cheers,

Mike

I don't suppose the plastic bit looks like this, does it?

Audi A3 Electric Windows Fix

You cant order the bit on its own, its a new carrier.

Nope, more like this...

It's the black plastic bit (this is the one that is not broken) that slides up and down the guide(?) and has a metal bracked attached into which the window is secured.

Sorry for the photo quality, it's a camera phone and it's evening:O

Am i asking for trouble getting one from a scrappy? i.e. has it already had half its life and so will fail in half the time?

Yeah they dont last that long anyhow.

Bought an original one from Skoda dealer. The bit where the window sits on the reg is made out of metal - think the old one will be plastic. Will find out when my mechanic gets to work on it!

Best get it from a dealer. Can't see you saving much in the long run buying from a scrappy. You can obviously ask the dealer for a discount - they won't bite! :D

Have a look at the VW vortex site. There is a great (but too late for you) detailed description of fitting new regulator (says golf, but was almost identical to Fabia). Within it are good pictures of the old plastic and new metal clips. They may be available somewhere (are there differences between VW polo/golf/new beetle and Fabia?) so you could go armed with a picture. If you can't get one, it seems possible to make a metal strengthener for one from a scrappy or even glue the old bits together - or make your own metal one. One tip from doing SWMBO's Fabia; when putting the cable back on, bend back one of the tabs which hold the cable end nipple near a pulley. This makes it easier to get the cable over the pulley without damaging with a screwdriver. When all in place, pull cable tight and bend back.

Best of luck
