A few issues with my new motor

Featured Replies

Howdy One and All!!

Well, I've had my 1999 Octy TDI SLX three days and I'm already starting to notice a few little issues even though its only done 66k.

Today we had a fairy hefty amount of rain and I came out to the car only to find Niagra Falls had been let loose on my drivers seat. I have a feeling the seals arent meeting up with the glass properly or something so I'm wondering if I can sort this problems for good by using some kind of clear sealant. I'm not really fussed about using the sunroof as I have windows and Air-Con if it all gets too much...So do you thing using a clear sealant would sort it??

Also I seem to have the difficulty starting when the car is Warm... I have read a few posts and the re-occuring theme seems to be the Coolant temperature sensor is knackered. Would you agree that this sounds likely or has anyone got any other idea's what it may be?

And finally (My Favorite) the engine seems to have some monster flat spots!! If you feather the throttle through the gears the turbo seems to kick in not too badly... But when you give it full throttle it seems to hesitate:mad:.

Once again after browsing the forum lots of people seem to be mentioning the MAF sensor. Does anyone know how easy these are to change and if so where can I get one for a descent price?

Oh Well... Hopefully I can get these few teething issues sorted and I can enjoy the full potential of this skoda. If I can get the performance to match the handling I will be well happy :).

I'm pretty new to these forums so I look forward to chatting with you all.

Happy motoring Peoples!!

Run a site search for "sunroof drains diagram"; that might help with the flooding issue.

Yes, the hot start problem seems like the coolant temp sensor.

Before buying a new MAF, test it by disconnecting it. This forces the engine onto a default air map, which isn't perfect but is better than just plain wrong values from a duff MAF!

Thanks for the input Ken... I shall try unplugging the MAF for the journey home from work and see if there is any difference.

I guess changing the coolant temperature sensor shouldnt be a too difficult job either. I found a pretty good thread on here that gave a step by step run down of what to do so I may have a crack at doing that too.

As regards the sunroof I shall have a look at the diagrams but I dont think I'm brave enough to start taking bits apart... looking closer at the sunroof today it looks like someone has taken a screwdriver to it at some point in its life?? Maybe just putting some clear sealant on it would do a quick waterproof fix until I can do something properly?

Many thanks for your help once again

The sunroof "window" should lie level with the roof itself all round; if it doesn't, or if the seal is damaged, that should give you an idea where to start on it.

Ken you're a genius!! I unplugged the MAF for the journey home and the car went like a rocket!!! Many thanks for the advice... I will be getting that changed asap!!

Anyone know a good site to get one from at a reasonable price?? I had a look at a site called OnlineAutomotive.co.uk and they reckon between £50 -£80 depending on which engine you've got??

As regards my little waterfall... I checked the sunroof and the black seal around the glass looks to be bent out of shape at the front. I'm guessing from the scrapes around the sunroof that someone had a go at it with a scredwriver and bent it out of shape?

Oh well I'm sure its all fixable!!! I'm much happier with the car now that I know the turbo isnt knackered

Thanks once again for the advice Ken!!

I have attached a few pics of my leaky sunroof... Its quite easy to see that the black bit surrounding the glass has been buckled at the front as it doesn't line up with the bodywork of the car! Not by a mile!!

Hmphhhh... Has anyone had a new sunroof fitted?? What kind of price can I expect to be charged to get that sorted?? I hate sunroofs!!! I dont see the point of them at all:orb_mad:

I'm no genius; just learning at the feet of giants like Ross. :D

I've no idea how to sort your sunroof, but you've found the leaky bit.

Oh and I don't see the point of a sunroof in a car with Climate Control either (despite loving the "roof window" aspect).

The coolant sensor costs about £30 and is a 10 minute job :):)
