VW GPS Ariel help / Poor signal

Featured Replies

Have installed a VW GPS Ariel on the car, it has three cables coming from it, one connects to the Existing radio antenna, the other the GPS but the third one is laying empty, anybody any ideas? I have a feeling it has something to do with the amplification, which would make sense as I can’t get a radio signal at the moment,

Are you sure it's not GSM as well?

Do you have the part number handy?

Thanks Stu, never thought of that, I didnt take the part number from it before fitting but I will have a look tonight to see if I can see anything.

Can a supplimentary signal amp work with these? the signal is really as good as non existant.

Is it a whip version GPS antenna or a Sharkfin one? The sharkfin antenna doesn't have amplifier for the radio built-in.

Its a whip, looks almost like standard with a small hockey puck on the frony of it.

Wonder if it's faulty as they are normally pretty good.

Spoke to Phil that I got it off and he recons it was working well when he last used it so i'm going to whip the roof lining off tonight again and double check the connection up there.

Its my standard ariel wire, MFD1 head unit and VW GPS ariel. hope that doesnt matter?

:o:O Well, I was a bit miffed, after fitting the head unit myself with the help of a mate, who snoops about on here (cheers Kinnell ;)) and I knew the back of the unit was well connected I decided to to take the roof lining back down tonight and have another look at the ariel connection.

I discovered the third wire was indeed a phone connector, Phil filled me in earlier that the octavia has this as standard so it just lays empty in the fabia.

When I dropped the lining the problem became obvious.

Instead of connecting the Antenna to the existing car ariel KINNELL connected it to its own Telephone socket  and the car ariel was unconnected :D:D

my arty wee drawing of what happened :D
