Problems with installing a MF steering wheel

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've installed a new MF (radio/tel) steering wheel and replaced the unit behind the steering wheel. But it still doesn't work and I got some malfunctions in my O2. Who can help me to solve these problems?

Phew... You have a big list of errors :)

Ok, first of all, did you code the new steering control module? Probably not as it shows a tiptronic error. You need to code the new module to correspond your current setup.

Look here :

VW Golf (1K) Steering Wheel - Ross-Tech Wiki

My current soft coding is, as an example :

0002042

Secondly. You did install new airbag wire also, didn't you? It shows an airbag error so that would indicate that either you still have the same airbag wire, or it is incorrectly connected.

Thirdly, all the other errors are there because you had your battery disconnected. You need to do a basic setting for all the electric windows. Just lower the windows and put them back up. That resets them.

Then you need to do the G85 steering assist adaptation.

Instructions here :

Do you actually have a RNS unit installed? It shows some errors on radio also. Did you enable the navigation in CAN gateway?

As Downtime has covered a large proportion of your issues here then I will not need to reply to your email. Please correct the items he mentions and then get back to us with an updated Autoscan Print.

You are giving a lot of information about your car away there Executive, reg# Vin# engine# etc i'd replace it with an edited version if i were you, also i'm looking at doing the same mod as you myself, where did you get the MF steering wheel and about how much do they cost.

Hi Downtime,

New update:

Adapting the Steering Limit Stop Adaptation doesn't seem to work, can you help me?

Greetz Executive

How are you doing it?

First you need to do the basic setting for G85 sensor. It's done by starting the car, turning the wheel one turn left then center then one turn right. Drive the car on a straight line for a few meters and keep the speed less than 20km/h.

Ensure the wheels are straight. Then in VCDS go to module 44 - Steering assist, select codingII, enter 40168 as passcode. Then select basic setting, go to group 060, then activate the basic setting by clicking ON/OFF/Next button. Field 1 says OK. Press Done go back. Do not turn off the engine.

Next you need to adapt the steering limit. Drive around until the ESP light goes out. It should do it almost instantly when you drive off.

When the ESP light is out and the car is parked but engine still running center the steering wheel and keep it there for 5 secs. Next turn the steering wheel completely to the left and keep it there for 5 secs. Then turn the wheel completely right and keep it there for 5 secs. Now when you center the steering wheel the steering assist light should go out.

If it does not, try the limit adaptation process again.

It's important that the ESP light is off. If it's not the limit adaptation does not work.

If that VCDS printout is a new one, you didn't do the coding did you? First you need to code the steering controller module. Do the adaptation after that.

Hi Downtime,

I'm fine and how are you?

I made the basic setting for the steer assist, it said ok.

I don't have ESP in my car I only have ABS and ASR, is that a problem?

I'll try this tonight, thanks. But will the power steering work again after this?

Hi Downtime,

Fine thanks. What I meant with my "How are you doing it?" I was actually referring the method you are using when doing the steering assist adaptation :)

Yes it will work. I think the method should be as described even you don't have ESP system. Is the ASR light off?

All you need to do now is to do the steering limit stop adaptation. It should be ok then.

One more question, do you have a navigation system in your car or a normal radio? Reason I'm asking is that you seem to have a lot of errors in your VCDS log that are related to navigation system. If not, is your car new or used?

If used someone may have played with the settings a little bit..

Did you change the airbag wiring loom?

Hi Stu,

Yes I did!!! Is that a problem?

Hi Downtime,

I've placed a Navigationsystem Columbus and a BT kit (OEM)

Fine thanks. What I meant with my "How are you doing it?" I was actually referring the method you are using when doing the steering assist adaptation :)

Clearly you have some issues which relate to the recent changes you've made and it's a little difficult to work out why.

The airbag issue is concerning, was this already present before this time?

Change your steering controller coding to 0012042 and see if that clears the steering wheel fault.

Change the CAN Gateway to 3F3F47C80F0302.

Make sure you clear all fault codes, you may need to open each controller individually to do this and then carry out another scan for us to see.

My thoughts exactly. There shouldn't be any airbag faults if all the connections are ok.

Executive. Look from this thread :

http://briskoda.net/octavia-ii/retrofitted-multifunctional-steering-vrs-lot-pics/83624/

The 9th picture on the first TallioN's post shows very clearly how the wires should be connected and routed safely so they won't get pinched when pushing the airbag back into the steering wheel.

Oh, and are the MF buttons working? They should work even if the coding is not correct.

Hi Stu and Downtime,

For some reason the long coding helper is adding position sensing, I have removed it now so try this in the Gateway 3F3F47C8070302

You should code 77 with 00422 (This is for English Language)

Assuming you have the following -

CD Changer

Aux Input

No Sound System

4 Speakers

You should change 56 or 37 (they are the same and one will change the other) to 060004000401000100

If you do not have CD changer or Aux in then use 000004000401000100

I'll be interested to know how you get one with your Columbus as you have one of the new Superb ones and not an Octavia one. I have had an initial report that these don't function correctly in an Octavia but I've not tried it myself.

This fault, Diagnostic Interface for Data Bus (J533), means there is a break in the CAN gateway databus so check your connections at the point where the phone meets the columbus as it's common to both. Did you make the connection behind the Columbus?

As for the steering angle and limit stop, try doing them the other way around - It does take some messing around but it does work.

Do all of that and then get back to us again.

One more question. What version is your Slip ring on the steering column? Is it 653 C or just 653? If it's 653, you have an incompatible steering controller module. AQ ending steering control module is for 653 C slip ring only.

You can check this easily by lifting the top part of the steering column plastic cover behind the steering wheel.

Hi Stu,

How are you? I don't have a CD Changer or Sound System and an Aux input is standard in a Columbus isn't it? The Skoda Columbus and the BT interface work fine, I have no problems with the connection. I connected the BT to the Columbus like you described in your installation manual. I bought the Columbus in May 2008, what's the big difference between a Columbus for the New Superb and the Octavia II. I'll try to do it the other way around. I'll keep you in touch.

The Aux Input is a small 3.5mm jack socket hidden in the armrest if you have one.

The part number of your Columbus begins 3T and hence is a Superb II part. Yours will most probably say Columbus on the front in the middle at the top.

If your phone/columbus reports a problem with the gateway communication then it is probably a break in the wire and is why I suggest to check the connections.

Hi Stu,

Sometimes the VAG COM says, the Steering Angle Sensor (G85) is defective, how can I check this? When I try to get the basic setting it says ok, but when I try to activate the basic setting it says not possible.

Please help!!!

Did you move the slip ring when you uninstalled it?

What about the other faults, have they gone?

  • Author

No, I only uninstalled the Steering Wheel, airbag, unit and plastic covers.

See the printouts above

Can you let us have the latest autoscan.

  • Author

When I place the old unit back, do I also have to make the basic settings?

  • Author

Is it a big problem when I moved the slip ring?

They aren't supposed to be moved so if it did it may have been damaged.

However I would think it's better to try the basic settings first.
