About 200 km, why?

I have found a short drive makes it easier to do it. The distance you have covered should be more than adequate.

How are you performaing the procedure?

  • Author

like you described via Ross Tech.

can you show me another autoscan, make sure you clear codes first.

It's ok - I see you have posted a scan above now.

My girlfriend went away with the car, so I can't make one now

Try this too.

In the VCDS options screen, set the workshop code and dealer number with these values - 790 73430

Then change the code on the Columbus, save it and then change it bak to what it was before, this will give you a dealer code and workshop number saved.

Do this with the Steering Wheel (16) too.

You must check the connection on the CAN wiring for the Phone/Columbus too - You have a fault there.

I will, thanks Stu!!!

Hi Downtime,

My Slip ring says 653, is it really a big problem? Is that why I can't activate my basic settings?

Greetz Executive

One more question. What version is your Slip ring on the steering column? Is it 653 C or just 653? If it's 653, you have an incompatible steering controller module. AQ ending steering control module is for 653 C slip ring only.

You can check this easily by lifting the top part of the steering column plastic cover behind the steering wheel.

Did you change the steering controller when you fitted the MFSW?

  • Author

Yes, I did.

I wouldn't be 100% sure on the slip ring issue myself, as I understand it the reason for needing a certain slip ring is so that it has the correct pin arrangement to make the connection from the MFSW and the steering controller. The faults on the MFSW side of things are now cleared which might lead you to think that the connections have been made.

I know there is some information regarding this on the RossTech website but I've never had to change a slip ring.

The problem you have is that you need to carry out basic settings on the steering angle sensor and the , I have done this many times myself and I can tell you it is a real pain to do and requires perserverance. Are you carrying out the login procedure correctly, you must not close the window once you have logged in until you have completed the basic setting.

I've been looking at ETKA and it does say that for a 653 slip ring you need a 549 AM steering controller. How restrictive this is I do not know.

I've got a 549AQ steering controller, before I do the basic setting do I have to open the basic setting window?

open the controller, carry out the log in procedure and then without closing the controller open the window to carry out the basic setting.

At each attempt you must carry out the login again.

  • Author

So you also had problems with the basic settings?

Not problems as such but I found it can take several attempts.

Very. From what I've understood you only can use certain controllers with certain slip rings.

You cannot get AQ to work with 653, AQ needs 653 C.

So only way to make it work is to either change the slip ring or change the module to AM.

Compatible slip rings and modules :

Cruise Control Retrofitting (1K) - Ross-Tech Wiki

Here's a very good explanation on how the electronic steering assist works in VAG cars, on page 14 it shows how the slip ring and G85 steering sensor are connected to steering control module.

Hi Downtime,

So if I change my slip ring to part number1K0 959 653C, it will work together?

And part number 1K0 959 653C is compatible with my car?

That's how I've understood it. If possible you could also try to source a new control module that's compatible with your slip ring. Like Stu wrote, AM ending module should be ok with 1K0 959 653.

I'm pretty sure that the "G85 defective" error shows because the control module is not compatible with your slip ring.

Hi Stu and Downtime,

Is it possible to change my slipring from 1K0 959 653 to 1K0 959 653C without getting any malfunctions?

Greetz Executive

Yes, it should be possible but I don't know if there's going to be another problem somewhere as your car is equipped with 653 slip ring.

Safest and easiest would be to swap the control module to compatible one. The slip ring isn't the easiest one to change.

Hi Stu and Downtown,

I changed the slipring and I don't have any problems with my power steering. Only the right control on my MFSW doesn't work. Do you have an idea?
