Setting up Wireless

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just moved into a new house. There is wired broadband already set up and I want to make it wireless. I have bought a Netgear wireless router. The problem is, that the existing wired router is a Virgin media one. The internet cable comes out of an 'FM' socket on a NTL box on the back wall and runs into the router. The cable is round. So obviously I cannot just disconnect it and plug it into the wireless router cos its not a phone line connection!

What should I do?

you need a cable router rather than an ADSL one

Is it cable or adsl connection i.e. via fibre optic cable or normal phone line

Well the supply is via cable but the wireless router I have (I bought it previous to moving in to this house) does not have a cable connection I think its ADSL. So, is my only option to shell out for a cable wireless router or it there any other way around the problem?

Thanks for the help guys, computer whizz I am not!

The 'router' in place at your house is probably a cable modem.

As another poster has said, you need wireless cable router (with an ethernet port), not a ADSL one. Is there a model number on the NTL equipment?

If you're with Virgin you can get a free wireless router on the medium (10 meg) package and above. They are also doing half price for 6 months on that package I think.

I did this recently and it was a Netgear router that they sent out to me.

I was an existing customer and just upgraded from the lower package.

You could use the netgear wireless kit as a bridge to the cable modem but it'll be simpler just to get a wireless cable router.

Virgin send out a new wireless router but I've had to do this recently. Basically, they will send you a cable modem and a netgear wireless router. You have to use the LAN socket on the cable modem to go to the netgear. Then, turn on the cabe router followed by the netgear and hopefully it'll work.
