Fuel Consumption on a new Fabia vRS

Featured Replies

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has had poor fuel consumption from their first tank (or few tanks) of derv in their Fabia vRS...

From my first tank I've got 33.6 MPG

(250 miles from 34 litres).

Now either I'm driving it like a petrol car (probably), or it's just that the engine is still tight? (I'm sure I read somewhere that the PD's fuel economy doesn't start getting good until the engine loosens up??)

Since filling up, I have tried to use higher gears (4th where I'd usually use 3rd etc) and the mfd told me that I was getting around 45 MPG (I reset it when I filled up)... That was over about 14 miles.

So, I think it must have a bit to do with my driving style, where I drive (peak district) and the fact it's brand new.

Any comments?

It will get better as its loosens up. Also your driving style will alter when you learn how best to drive the car.

I was amazed at mine yesterday. On my journey down to MK from Northampton on the M1 at a steady 65mph (lots of traffic but moving) I averaged 57 mpg which is rather good for my car. Normally I get 45mpg ave and 35 ave when driving like a loon.

My fuel consumption was pretty high when I first got it. Regularly under 40 MPG. Now it seems to be between 40-45 most of the time. Bearing in mind though I drive very fast most days. Got 43.5 MPG on this mornings trip to work, and I was driving pretty hard.

It will be partly down to your style, but you'll get used to it. It will improve when the engine beds in.

Mind you, average is still only 41.2 MPG, but all that proves to me is that I'm driving the car the way it was intended to be driven

It will take a while to become acustomed to the driving style a diesel requires.

Since hitting the 3/4000 mark the MPG has gone through the roof, on a recent 100 journey A/B roads I managed 60mpg on the nail.

Give it time and use that 6th gear, on the 2004 models it's more flexible, you can sludge round in sixth without to much trouble.

Oh and use BP Ultimate Diesel :)

33.6? Your not trying very hard. Took a slightly modded one (200 bhp!) for a quick blast, and averaged 22.7!

It does take a whilke for the MPG to come up, ive done 9k miles and i get between 46-51 on m/a/b roads driving pretty hard, and in traffic every morning. It was less than that at first, does anyone know what the average MPG will be when i get it modded to 190BHP!?

I struggled to get over 40mpg in the first 1000 miles

Getting 43-50 now (Revo'd)

does anyone know what the average MPG will be when i get it modded to 190BHP!?

Be about the same as mine id expect then, circa 45 mpg.

I've just had the 10 K service, and doing 120KPH on the motorway to and from work ( 40 miles each way) i am getting 53 mpg, was getting mid 40's when doing 140kph and the car had less than 6K on the clock.

I am well chuffed with the MPG it is now comparable to my previous 90 BHP Octavia TDI.

It just gets better. :)

I must be running mine in too gently. Had it a week and have not seen anything below 51 on the display with the exception of a two mile trip to pick someone up where I got 44.

Perhaps I need to find a good B road rather than the M-way and A roads I usually run on. :D

Anybody got some lead I can put on my foot? :P

Admettedly I could get 52+ out of the 16v 1.4 engine on a 20 mile run to the dealer in Cambridge (had plenty of practise!!!), but it was down on power according to a concerned passenger and the dealer. The average I used to get for that was in the 47-50mpg bracket.

Does experience show that we can really believe the mpg figures shown on the display? I haven't had the car long enough yet to be able to check miles travelled against fuel bought.

I found it was fairly accurate (5%) on the 1.4 16v engine.

EDIT (addition): Although the distance to empty was always a little cautious which is no bad thing!

I get between 52-62 ave depending on traffic on a 108 mile round trip to work from Chester to Bury.. depends on the distance between my foot and the floor....

Can Drop the ave when I hit the A roads from the motorway to the house still the can is fun
