turbo removal

Featured Replies

hey there guys, have many people on here removed their stock turbo?

just thought id get a good idea on what i have to do?

i know its 4 bolts and a gasket fixing onto the downpipe, but what about to the manifold?

thank, mark:thumbup:

Its not a job for the faint hearted.

The trickiest bit is the oil and coolant lines on top of the turbo as they sit under the manifold. And as the lines cross over there is a spacer under one of the lines. Which means you get banjo bolt, washer, spacer, washer, turbo. Trying to get that lot lined up and the bolt into the turbo aint easy.

im a helicopter engineer by trade so thinking that it might come in handy as we have some pretty daunting jobs at work, (and hopefully my handskills are pretty good).

to be honest tho im still pretty scared about the idea, im just not as confident on cars as i am aircraft, its mine so im worried about breaking it! haha

I had to do the same on my mk2 20v and not the easyiest of jobs but can be done.

I found it easyer to unbolt the turbo from the exhaust manifold and then unbolt from turbo manifold. once this is done remove the lower bracket that holds it onto the block. Once all this is done you can lower the turbo enough to be able to remove the turbo manifold to give you a lot more room. All that remains then is the TIP and the 4 pipes to the turbo (2 for coolant and 2 for oil).

One of those jobs you just take your time but hardly ever goes back first time.
