gearbox problems mk1 oct

Featured Replies

hi everyone just joined,i have a 52plate 1.9 sdi octavia with 2oo856 miles on her clock ,still a great car .i think she will do another 100k no bother, change oil every 5000miles runs as smooth as a new car (well almost)but gears are a bit sticky sometimes ,people tell me it,s the gearbox because it.s a common fault with them ,gearbox is losing oil also ,probably the oil seal no doubt.have looked online for 2nd hand box but, scrap yards are looking for silly money for one i.e...£600 ..£700..& they are all down south,as i am from scotland they won,t deliver it ....anyone know where i can get a box in scotland...i,m not desperate yet but, it will sieze up no doubt one of these days

Why not try changing the oil in the gearbox first, and/or checking the linkage before shelling out for a new/replacement gearbox.

Sounds like I have some going to catch you up, 136k on my Y plate 110TDi

As Matt says, a sticky box might well just be in need of a oil change.

A leak is probably just a seal.

As for a replacement box, whereabouts are you?

What does "gears are a bit sticky" mean?

Hard to get out of gear?

Not having a go just trying to see if you have the same problem as me. I'm starting to think mines the clutch as it sometimes feels harder to get into gear when on the move.

Martin, I'd guess they're hard to engage and/or disengage. In your case, does it sometimes feel like the engine is revving higher, but the car not accelerating? That's the usual first symptom of an Octy clutch.

I'd suggest having the box taken off and any oil seals changed + the rest inspected by a proper gearbox rebuilding place. You can then ask them to clean the sludge out fix any problems that are just starting and fill the box with fresh oil.

You could put a new clutch kit in while you've got the box off and get all the linkages adjusted too.

That lot would probably cost you not much and most of the cost involved in rebuilding the box is getting it off the car.

This way you get new oil, new clutch and a fixed box all in one go minimising time off the road.

If you can undo the filler for the gear box, then it would be worth taking out the old oil and trying new oil (get the stuff from the dealers or Millers TRX Fully Synth 75w-90) and see if things improve.

Either way it's usually a lot cheaper to get the box refurbished than to get it replaced. That plus you don't know what condition a used box is going to be in. It could be on it's last legs too.

No definity not slipping, just feels a little harder to get into gear when on the move third is probally the worsed.

Has been serviced by Skoda until i got it and now has 108000 miles on clock so i suppose its never had a gearbox oil change?

Well Martin, I'd go with a box oil change then, and don't use Sylkolene; it's well documented that VAG boxes don't like it.

ta, will give it a change when i get time then.

Hi

They are very very common to failure

The diff bolts IIRC

I do know when I was working at the dealership , these had gone in to a 5th year on warranty , but not sure now

Yes the boxes are very hard to get hold of and does usually need a new gearbox

Sorry :(

hi,taxi john here, many thanks to all that replied concerning my gearbox problem.maybe there is not much oil left in it right enough, i think it will have to come out in the near future for further investigation. ..it.s good to know that there are good people out there that will actually answer you back...(not to mention shell drivers club???...ok i won,t...cheers..

Allegedly, if you have an SDI and the box goes there is a kit that you can get to replace a cover once its sorted, and one dealer told me they have been told to fit the turbo boxes if one goes under warranty

There must be loads of VW engined cars in the scraps up here in Scotland and the ratios between boxes wont be that great so nearly any of them should fit
