Canon EOS 50D Review

Auto Focus

The 50D inherited its nine-point auto focus system from the 40D, but the system continues to be refined with every generation – meaning faster auto focus and better low-light auto focus every year. The 50D's AF system proved to be amazingly fast and mostly reliable, but not always consistent even with a stationary camera and stationary subject. Using two different lenses during out test period we noticed times when the 50D would select a slightly different AF lock even when the subject and the camera remained perfectly still. This would at times result in a photo that lacks critical focus for enlargements, but is still reasonably focused enough for smaller prints. It's hard to say this "focus creep" is the result of the lenses being used or the ultra-fast autofocus system, but it can be a major frustration when you think a photo is in focus and it turns out to be slightly out of focus under enlargement.

Cheers for that  Sounds like the AF ain't doing what it should

I'm gonna do some comparisons to a 350D with the same lenses to see the results, everyone says the 40D should be a lot better so let the tests do the talking.

I haven't used the camera much since I got it back. I wonder does their tests take into account the Sharpness setting on the camera, just noticed that it was still at max setting when I got it back, which is how I left it. So when they did their work it DIDN'T go back to default first. I would have though all setting would get defaulted before they work on it.

Re connectivity I got the Camera back from Canon, it looks like they JUST Cleaned it AGAIN and sent it back to me, I ain't impressed.

Again I'm gonna use the 350D to see what happens with it. I came across someone else with the same issue, jpeg+RAW problem on 40D: Canon EOS 50D - 10D Forum: Digital Photography Review

Can't be bothered to sign up on th e forum but:

I also had this problem, just wondering how does transferring with a Memory Card Reader differ from transferring direct with camera?

The Canon cameras use P2P transfer (via WIA on Windows) whereas a card reader will use Mass Storage. The Windows WIA drivers are just a bit crappy and get confused.

Looks like your right about the P2P, the 350D has the same issue.

I meant signing up to answer on the other forum ;)

Yeah, it's a Windows WIA issue. Macs aren't affected with the same problem even through the P2P camera transfer. Not sure if it's changed but last time I looked the WIA drivers weren't officially supporting CR2 files. It worked, but when there was a JPEG file with the same name it got confused. So RAW only was ok, but RAW + JPG messed up on transfer. I think the Canon EOS Utility program bundled with the cameras should be able to download both without getting confused? Not sure.

I believe that apart from the 50D (and maybe the 1 series) it's quicker to use a USB2 or Firewire cardreader anyway, and you can pick a USB one up for around a fiver now, so in the long run, it's better to ignore the bug and use the card direct?

My 350d has started to refuse to use the cable at all now. Just hangs whatever program you're using. So I'm gonna be buying a card reader (my USB1 reader requires me to watch the entire 24hr le mans to pass the download time). This one for a fiver (50% off this price) looks cool, so will be ordering that soon :D : Boynq Toastit! USB2.0 Multi Card Reader - Silver / Black £9.99 - Free P&P

I actually do have a cheap Lidl Cardreader. Was more concerned that if I didn't have it and was away, I wouldn't be able to transfer onto a USB memory stick etc to clear some memory card space if using a PC without Utilities etc.
