Advice For New Tyres

Featured Replies

Need 2 x new front tyres for my octy vRS (225/40 zr18) , currently have Michen Pilots on & have done 18k with them , to get another pair they want to charge me £141 each for the Michelin or £115 for Pirelli P-Zero ???

Has anyone ever used www.blackcircles.com good or bad ?

Even get a buget tyre for £68  :thumbdwn: no thanks

try goodyear eagle gsd 3 they seem fine on mine and they are a bit cheaper

I've used Black Circles several times. Good service and prices.

Very poor wear though, and a little noisey.

if the p zero are neros they will be spot on.

Some of the Oz Golf people find the GSD3s made in China or Thailand less than impressive, so these days you need to check where the tyre was manufactured..

Im not running 18's but i've just gone for the Avon ZV5 in 215/45/R17 and im well impressed. Paid £175 all in for tracking balancing and fitting for 2 tyres.

Handle well in the dry, no experience in the wet yet im affraid.

If your after a tread pattern that looks good, you will be dissapointed...but they look similar to Continental Tyres.

Falken 452 are excellent tyres, for a very good price IMHO.

Only 18K ! Just put of interest have they worn badly on the inside edge ?

Maybe do a search on tyres or dunlop. I've read a few peoples unflattering thoughts on the the Dunlop Maxx, so when my new vRS came with Dunlops I got the dealer to swap over the Michelin PXs from another new vRS they had in stock.

I'm happy with the PXs, but it is early days yet.

Ye just ordered 2 off from blackcircles fitted for £171.Usually a Toyo man but prices too expensive the now.

I've placed order for new tyres few days ago. I expect them to arrive today. Before changing I've done quite a research considering roadnoise and dry grip and breaking. So, I've got down to two only:

- Pirelli P Zero Roso Assimetrico

- Michelin Primacy HP

Ended up ordering Pirelli, £119 each fitted and balanced, as they were quieter and with better dry grip then Michelin.

About Dunlop, let me tell you this. My car has 20.000km, Dunlop Sport SP1A still has a lot of thread but I'm changing them because of:

- Extremely slippery on dry roads

- Hugh roadnoise

I'm running on 225/45-17.

No charles , not badly worn on the edges , just about down to the limiters , even wear all over

I used one of the on-line suppliers (can't remember which one, but it wasn't Blackcircles) and the fitting agent was the local tyre dealer I normally use.

His original quote hadn't been as good, but when I had the tyres fitted he said next time to call him with the on-line price I'd been quoted and he would beat the price.

So might be worth taking the Blackcircle quote to your usual tyre fitter.

The SP Maxx I had from the factory wore better and were less noisey than the GSD3's I now have. The Dunlops wore perfectly even across my tyres. The grip was probably a bit better on the GSD3's, although the wear was affected by running them a little high and wearing the middle excessively.

Falken FK452s.

I've got them all round now and it's the first time I've got the exact same tyre twice on a car. (Had P Zero Neros, Michies, Potenzas and other so called top names previously). These tyres are way beyond their modest pricing - I just hope they stay that way.

My mate with a 6MPS swapped from Potenzas all round to FK452s on my advice and says they stomp all over the RE050s he had.

My mate with a CTR had the goodyears, then Toyo T1-Rs, and I finally persuaded him to try the FK452s... he can't wait til his final pair of T1-Rs wear down so he can get FK452s all round :)

I just hope they don't discontinue or over inflate (no pun intended ;) ) the prices of these bad boys so I can get them for ever and ever

blackcircle are very expensive compared with mytyres

The Michelin Primacy is a "touring" tyre, not in the same league as the Pilot sports or the Goodyear Eagle F1. But would last a lot longer.

Still quite impressed with the Vredestein Ultrac myself, still good grip after 17k on the front, and still 2.5mm tread left. Going to get another few months out of them before I change them for the bulk of winter. Got Eagle F1 Asymmetric on the back, they're a high wearing tyre, had them on the front for a few thousnad miles before rotating them to the back, and they're now on the back 4000 miles and are down to 4mm already. :( At that rate I may end up having to change all 4 tyres at the same time. :(

I dunno what to go for next. I'm tempted to try the Falken FK452 or the Kumho KU31 after talking to some friends. But I don't want to end up regretting it. I'm hearing about Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas mentioned a bit. Its hard to know what to do.

Finally thought that I had settled on getting Goodyear F1 Assymetrics to replace my Continental SportContact 2s which require replacing after only 14,000 miles on the front.

I am now worried that the Goodyears are likely to wear as fast as the Contis or in fact worse!

Back to the drawing board! The Falkens sound good though.

My mate has Falkens on a Focus ST so I will get his opinion on them as well.

Well, my car had Conti SportContact2 on it from factory, they lasted 21k. So, the Goodyears seem to wear twice as fast.

Well after looking at several tyre review websites i am going for the Pirelli P-Zero Rosso , they seem to get very good write ups on many sites

  • 3 weeks later...

My mate with the Focus ST really rated the Falken 452s, but my usual garage (just across the road from work) couldn't get hold of them.

Went for Pirelli P-Zero Rossos in the end. A lot cheaper than the Conti SportContact 2's but not as cheap as the Falkens.

Have put the Pirellis on the back, so it is a bit dificult to tell what they are like at the moment. However, putting the SportContact 2's from the rear on the front has transformed the car.

As the characteristics had changed slowly as the tyres had worn down, I hadn't realised how bad the fronts had got.

I now have 'some' traction away from the lights and the turn in is much better.

I used mytyres.co.uk to find what I wanted and then went to my local tyre dealer and he bettered the price I could get online, so it's worth a try that way.

Whatever tyres you go for (I have got Continental SportContact 3's all round and I am fairly happy so far) DO NOT get anything made by Wanli (they are cheap for a reason!!!!!). The previous owner had put a couple of Wanli's on the front and whilst there was still a lot of tread on them when I bought the car, the tyres were crap in the dry and dangerous in the wet. Just to add insult to injury, they were really noisy too.
