Lumpy Idle

Featured Replies

Hi Everybody, I have a high mileage Octavia 1.6 GLXI which has a lumpy idle on pulling up. When I stop the the tickover will be lumpy almost to the point of stalling before eventually correcting itself and idleing at the correct speed. This only happens when the engine is at operating temp.

I did have a similar problems at the end of last year except the engine would flutter on pulling up and almost always stall and be a pig to get started. On this occasion I took the car to a local garage who diagnosed the car as having a faulty crankshaft sensor and replaced it which caused the engine to idle at around 1500 rpm, they then further diagnosed a fault with the throttle body and replaced it reset it with little noticable improvement. Ater running the car over a weekend and a few furhter days until the garage could fit it in the idleing at 1500rpm eventually corrected its self an the car ran perfectley until very recentley. The garage seem to want me to right a blank cheque at the time and once again this seems to be the case, saying that the part they fitted are OK.

What I would like to know is, is it possible this problem is related to the one I had last year or do Ihave a new problem and what could it be????

I dont really want to entrust this work to a garage for them to just give me a sharp intake of breath.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

How old are the spark plugs?

Did the garage actually read fault codes before replacing the crank sensor?

Is the lumpiness only occurring when the over-run fuel cut-off cuts back in? You can test this by driving at about 1400 rpm and declutching. If the engine's not lumpy then, I'd suspect the cut-off's not cutting back on properly.
