why are motorbikes allowed to be noisier than cars?

Featured Replies

I live in a fairly rural bit of Norfolk, but there is a main road about 1/2 mile away. The main noise from it is bikes and farm machinery. I had a Sierra 4x4 years ago which had a homemade exhaust for all of 3 days before I got pulled (sounded great but very anti social:eek:), so how come I regularily here very noisy bikes, why are they not getting pulled? Too much like hard work for the old bill maybe. And you would have thought health and safety would cover the various bit of agricultural stuff that roars about.

Rant over:D

I don't know the exact regulations but bikes can and do get pulled for having race cans.

A lot of the aftermarket exhausts have removable baffles to let you change them from road legal to race. So you have it loud until MOT time.

But I agree some are ridiculously loud.

Not so much bikers round my way, but blinkin' irritating chav teenagers on mopeds. To answer your question I don't think they are allowed to be any louder, it's just that (AFAIK) the statutory noise limit only applies up to the point that the vehicle leaves the showroom. And since bikers are just as prone as other drivers to believe the rubbish spun about 'performance exhausts', they buy them thinking their bikes are a lot faster for having them fitted. Frankly, I can think of far more sociable and responsible ways of squeezing a handful of extra bhp from my vehicle...

50cc and 120 decibels! If the wind is in the right direction you can hear them coming from about 2 miles away! All for 31.9 mph.

It would be easy to pull them or larger bikes if they bothered to try, any Friday evening in the summer 2 cars could pull literally dozens, so why don't they?

I have a problem with my neighbour, he has 3 Harleys, all of which are silly loud, to the point that if you're outside and he starts one, you can get the fright of your life.

I've not complained yet, ( when i moved into the street i had a silly loud Impreza, so cant have too much of a go)

But what i dont like, is the fact he'll start one at 9.30-10pm at night, and it's guaranteed to wake my daughter in the front room.

The street is silent apart from when that starts...

Rant over ! :D

I would've thought it would fail an MOT with noise like that.

If the story my mum told me is true (she used to be on Breckland District Council, so I guess she'd know!) there is only one police patrol for the whole of rural Norfolk on evenings and weekends...

But, one of the only cost effective ways to extract more HP from a bike engine is with a race can or a full system, not to many turbo's to squeeze extra boost from etc. My Z1000 makes a 17BHP More on the full system with Power commander but I have removeable baffles and use them a lot. There is only so much space to fit the "tubing" on a bike

There is noise and then there's people taking the ****, and there are plenty of the latter on both sides of the fence.

I was really fed up the other night, I had an exam in the morning, and some **** on a bike came up our road.

I always struggle to sleep, that night I had fallen alseep, before the bike came along. It was ridiculously loud, Absolutely no need for that.

I am a biker (just in case you never noticed LOL) and I totally agree with you Charlie. My next door neighbour has a Harley and he will sometimes leave for work at 5am and will rev the fecker up before leaving. This week I am working locally so will make the local Bike meet on Wednesday, but at 10pm when I am pulling into the street I will hit the kill switch and coast in.

One point though, have you never been woken up by some ***** who has 15 subs in the boot and playing the latest boom boom dancetastic track so loud that it's only actually legible as anything other than white noise to dog's or hump back whales? :D

Whilst we are on this sort of subject, one thing that does pee me off is racetracks and noise limits. If you don't want to be distrubed by noise from vehicles then wtf move near to one?

I think the problem is he has 3 Harleys, perhaps he is also a member of the baddass chapter of the angry accountants. Harley's .... don't get me started about those over priced agricultural peices of ancient ****e:D

We stayed in a cottage near East Fortune this Summer, and there was a track day on the first weekend we were there. Can't say it bothered me, though - it was only for an afternoon after all. I think we were about 400yds away from the nearest bit of track. I don't know if their 102dB limit is restrictive or generous, but like I say, the noise didn't bother us... :ne_nau:

I think the problem is he has 3 Harleys . . .:D

Anyone who has 3 Harleys has a lot of deep-rooted problems that probably started with some childhood trauma

Personally, I'd sell up and move if my neighbour had just one Harley, particulalry if he (or she) had facial hair!

My neighbour has no facial hair, but rides everywhere with a potty on his head and a "Pauly Senior" just ate the neighbours cat expression on his face.

You dont live in my street do you ??

Sounds like we have the same neighbour ! :D

Edited to say : My neighbour also wears his Terminator 2 style sunglasses when he rides the bike....day or night !

Noisy b*stards are a problem whatever the source of noise, but the one I meant at the start are about 1/2 mile away! If they were next door I'd be under arrest for murder by now.

Mine does to, and now he has taken to wearing a US Spec cycling helmet, no BSI Kite mark etc, that's going to be fun when the eventual "off" happens

Fortunately Fluffmeister, we are free from the Boom box trouble, we are in Germany. Its not just bikes though, Some of the cars can be bad, I was using that example of the bike as I have never heard anything as bad as that bike.

Not long and we will be back in the UK and infested with the Chavs!!

I presume you check he's not about before leaving the house :D

Are not bikes allowed to be louder as a form of positive discrimination designed to make children more aware of the effects of homosexuality?

I had a full race exhaust system on my ZZR1100 and that was not very loud :)

The police are always pulling people with race cans, but they seem to ignore

the Harley riders :(
