Audi to Octavia

Featured Replies

Looking to be a bit more economical and as I don't need so much space, I'm thinking about changing my A6 estate (2.5 tdi) for an Octavia one.

Does the team think I'll be happy!!

I've had one (brief) test drive in a 2 year old 2.0TDI L&K and the only slight niggle I had was it seemed noticeably noisier inside - both road noise and engine noise. (The A6 is very quiet.)

Obviously I'll try a longer test drive, but I thought I'd see if anyone had experience of both.

Thanks

Steve

PS - Only been lurking for a few days, but this seems a really good forum - so many helpful people :)

The Octy is a good car but it isn't an Audi so some comprimises will be made and I'd say that the road noise would be one of them.

But that could be down to the choice of tyre :)

Oh, and welcome :)

It's a more practical but less elegant car. I've used a previous model A6 for a couple weeks and I can say that apart from a bit less room and a bit more noise, the interior is just as usable.

You'll notice especially that there's less room for your right (wait, left) knee, depending if it's a LHD or RHD car.

The Audi isn't the softest of rides, ;) but perhaps it's better sound insulated??

Welcome to Briskoda :)

The Octy II has a noise level of 73 Db as opposed to 70 Db for the Audi. Not much in it, and you'll get much more bang for your buck.

A very relevant point - roughly a year old Octavia against a 4 year old A6 :)

The decibel is a logarithmic scale, a 3dB increase is a significant change.

I'm not that clever

You're right, but 1dB is often reckoned as the smallest change the ear can hear to 3dB is not insignificant, but neither is it huge!

I test drove an older Allroad before purchasing the Scout. In the same price bracket the newer Skoda seemed to make a lot more sense, but if money was no object I'd take the Audi. The funniest thing was the Audi salesman (first day in job) knew nothing about the car and when I had finished checking all the features I realized all the Skoda was missing was height adjustment on the suspension!

Your A6 is a V6 so would be quiter running i assume but the Octy is a good car.I know which i would want.

An increase of 3dB is the same as a doubling of the sound intensity! So that is quite an increase I'm afraid.

But that's not the same as being twice as loud.

It's a funny old thing, for sure.

Anyhoo i have been in an A6 3.2 quatro saloon and wasnt impressed. Then again i reckon the grey leather and matching trim make it look a lot more tacky than it would if it was all in black. Light grey trim always looks plasticy IMHO

Thanks for all the thoughts.

Absolutely agreed, IMHO this is the worst looking part of vrs inner.

If you can hold on for a common rail VRS, the reviews report these are far more refined than the PD units. I'm keen to test drive one to confirm.

I also like the sound of the Superb Estate which is in the later stages of development according to the press. CR 170 and 4x4 and lots of gadgets - very cool - and much cheaper than an A6. I just hope the rear end styling is better than the saloon (often is).

if the noise does bother you, you can always get some of that dynamat stuff and do the boot out with it, should quieten it down a bit.

I have both an Audi A6 (2004, quattro 1.8T petrol) and a Octavia Scout.

Here are my thoughts:

* The A6 is a bit quiter than the Scout (17" inch alloys on both, different tyres, though).

* The A6 has permanent 4 wheel drive, while the Scout has basically front wheel drive until it slips. Not noticable for everyday use.

* The octavia use much less fuel than the petrol engine. Newer engine and not permanent 4 wheel drive.

* I can load a lot more stuff in trunk of the Octavia than the A6, because the trunk is much deeper. It is not as wide as the A6.

* The backseat space is a little better in the A6. I can put child seats in both and still it is possible to sit in the front seat in both cars.

* The soundsystem is MUCH better in the A6 (I have a RNS-E navigation in there, no Bose), because of the subwoofer. I have the optional Sound System for the Octavia, but it is not as good as the A6.

* The Octavia is easier to drive, mostly because of servotronic.

* The interior space in the A6 seems bigger than the Octavia, because of the width of the car.

* Suspension is different, but not comparable (sportssuspenion vs. scout)

* I have sport seats in the A6, and I like them better that the seats in the Scout (both with Alcantara and leather)

* The engine sound is not very loud in the A6. The diesel in the Scout is pretty loud.

* The engine power suits the car much better in the Scout than the A6. A bigger engine in the A6 would be nice.

Overall, I really like the Scout, as it is brand new and have a lot of nice features. It's the perfect family car for me and is ideal on Norwegian roads (which are bumpy and slippery). Even so, I have more feelings for the A6. The interior quality is better and the overall feeling is better. I think my next car will be and Audi, even it the price is higher.
