My money is safe... or is it?

Featured Replies

After having discovered how easy it is to drive into work (and saving an hour every day on commuting) I seriously considered trading in the RS for a Superb (some diesel of some sort). As luck would have it there was a 'motorshow' in Milton Keynes town centre and Pilling Motors (new Skoda dealer in MK?) had one which I could 'fit'... What an enormous generously spaced interior! I've sat in the back of John's, but now I could set up the driver seat in a comfortable position and still sit behind myself with 10cm knee space left! For those that haven't met me, I'm 6'5" and 'overweight' ;), so this is quite an astonishing experience. However, upon opening the boot my plans fell through... what a let down compared to the RS. As I'm soon going to be the proud father of number 2 I need all the boot space I can get my hands on. Why can't they just make one in a 5 door version?

Anyway, what I'm after is some pointers to a similar priced, sized car, but with a decent boot space to boot. Nothing is definate yet (as I do like my RS), but I realise that I can't have it both ways...

I guess, logically speaking, a nearly new Passat estate might be worth a look?

A6 avant?

Octy Estate with the PD130 motor?

father of number 2

Most saloons these days dont have the boot your used to, so the only way is stick with what you have or go estate.

Having gone form an Octy estate to the Barge, there are times when I miss the boot for those spur of th moment buys, but to be honest the boot is plenty big enough for us 4. Hell, if it can accomodate 2 big suit cases and 2 travel bags, as well as other assorted items then I think its big enough for everyday life. The trouble is with your hatch you have been spoilt, but what you need to also consider is internal space. With Junior no1 and 2 you will need space and easy rear access, which the Barge has in abundance.

My suggestion...borrow one from your friendly dealer and try it.

As a final word, I dont regret swapping to a saloon from an estate.

ps..and yes..you dwarf me at 6ft1.

Edit: 2 medium/big suitcases, 3 holdalls, 1 saxophone in case, 1 camera gadget bag, various cuddlies and water proofs in the boot for downward journey. 1 tank of fuel on 650 miles.

I find estates a bit of a false economy towards space, although they look bigger on the outside, most of the additional space sits between the shelf and the roof. I don't consider an Octy Estate a step up (apart from economy) as it offers the same space inside as I'm already used to. I want it bigger, better and faster! :D

New diesel Octy would sort the rear leg-room problem and give you 560 litres of boot space to boot. So where's the problem? ;)

And I agree that estates are false economy when it comes to space. :D

I disagree because when I had mine it was regularly loaded to the roof, admittedly I have not owned an Octy hatch but when I had one as a courtesy car for a few days I struggled to fit everything in. Also with the retractable load cover you don't need anywhere to stash the parcel shelf like you do with the hatch. :D

So let's make that "For most people estates are false economy when it comes to space". :D

I would need the space above the load cover maybe once in every four years or so, and know of many other friends and relatives who have found that they seldom use that bit of comfined air and admitted that they went for the estate out of - gulp - fashion...

And don't you know that loading up to the roof is illegal? :p ;)

I never realised about the illegality of it, but I had a dog guard so it was safe and secured properly (Jason :D ) , I also like the design of estate cars they look nicer to me somehow.

why is it illegal?? surely its no different to a van.

but also if you dont have rear vision don't you have to stay below about 60 in national speed limits??

I don't know about the UK but it's illegal over here, as it blocks the view of the (compulsory) rear-view mirror.

And you will get fined for it too! As we now have a right-wing government adamant on coming down hard on crime, they signed a performance contract with the police - but on sheer numbers only! So we have the expected result - policemen booking everyone for every little offense to reach their quota, or risk missing their performance-related bonus or even chances of promotion...

Well, it's easier than catching real villains, isn't it?

Anyway, conservative-voting speed demons got what they wanted!

Officers over here also have certain "targets" to meet - these are assessed by numbers, but I'm not sure whether they have certain targets for different charges...

Q,

went from an Octy diesel estate to the RS.........boot space in the estate is much more useable.

Must admit that fitting baby seat in RS is a real pain....front seats much be bigger...can't remember having such problems with the estate.

We've just got a midi-MPV for SWMBO...chopped in her Yaris for a Mazda Premacy. If I was going to get rid of the RS as well I would have gone for a VW Touran 140PD.....7 seat standard now but the rear most one store in the floor.

But changing from a RS to an estate makes no sense as interior wise the same dimensions apply. All I want is a car with the bootspace of the RS and the interior dimensions of the Superb... anyone up for a cut & shut? :D

I believe the new Mondeo has better internal space than the Octy, and a boot comparable to it...

The Mondeo was actually the car we would have bought if I wasn't prompted towards the RS by a friend. Only trouble back then (year and a half ago) was finding a good (or even decent) used one.

Ford seem to have quite a few 1 year old/10k diesel Mondeos around the

I'm sure estates have their uses, but they don't do it for me personally (except for those RS6's at Oulton Park last year). Same goes for MPV's.

Both lay eggs that hatch.

And again we agree, Q. :D

MPVs (and SUVs) are more of the same when it comes to the unnecessary moving of useless air, aren't they? In fact I'd have an estate over any of them - like the 5-series Estate over the X3, as shown on TG last Sunday. At least estates are functional in some respects - when moving fridges or dogs.
