What OIL for 1.9tdi 130 ?

Featured Replies

What oil shel i use for Superb 1.9tdi 130 ?

anything with 505.01 rating, or 506.01 for variable interval servicing.

Halfrauds used to have a 30% off on their 505.01 oil (bought 30l last time for 2 years x 2 cars :-), but there are others. Millers XFE-PD 5w40 is available at DAP at similar price. And then there are Shell, BP, Castrol, etc but they're more expensive.

There's also a newer, VW507.00 specification which is also compatible, but again these oils are more expensive .

Who are they? :P

Yeah, it's a promotion we run every now & again. Even at full retail it's a reasonable price and of course if you have a trade card its even cheaper...

You can also use VW507.0, for variable and halfords have 5L of this for a price which is a lot cheaper than buying castrol or from a dealer as they are a bit more for only 4L.

Do we? You talking about the diesel fully synthetic in a dark grey bottle?

I thought that was 505.01...

*mutters under his breath and walks off to the test bed*

Magnatec is semi synthetic. Don't be confused by the term "Synthetic Engineering" on the bottle... it is not fully synthetic.

So, er, no

For what it's worth I use VX synth 5/30 @ 22 quid trade in mine for the last 25k with no ill effects, I think the true message is don't put any old **** in it, use a quality oil.

Sorry Bluefox, I had sincere intentions of dropping the Halfords name joke for good (I know it hurts your feelings ). But last weekend, when I looked for a new tyre inflator (Michelin 12262 - easily the best made and one of the fastest around) , I noticed that following some excellent reviews of this unit, and very bad reviews of Halfords units (2.5-3 times slower to inflate tyres), Halfrauds :thumbdwn: have hiked Michelin 12262 price from stlg30 to stlg67 :mad:

I got that Michelin from DAP for stlg36 yesterday - and that's including postage. So I'm afraid the "improved" name stays...

PD engines are the only diesels in the market where I would not assume that synthetic oil is good enough - the reason is cam lobe wear. There are a lot of manufacturers that have a special formulation for PD engines, e.g. Millers have synthetic XFE 5W30 which is OK for a non-PD diesel, but their XFE-PD is only semi-synthetic. They had to go down this route to meet cam lobe wear specification (basically the oil film has to be strong enough not to separate under localised pressure). And keep in mind that they'd probably have better sales if XFE-PD was fully synthetic.

Basically, what I am saying for PD engines use only VW505.01 / 506.01 / 507.00. Anything else will give you trouble, not after 25k miles, but more like 100k miles.

For other, non-DPF engines use any good synthetic, and for DPF only 507.00

Hmm... fair enough. I suspect I know why this has happened but... er... due to my link it's probably unprofessional to say :o

In any case this is something that's happened accross the store, not just with tyre inflators; our summer promotion has just ended and we're now in a new promotional period. As a result many prices have gone "back up" to "full retail" (such as your inflator, and another good example - our Apollo bikes).

My point is while I realise it's not helping you... I'll bet a bottle of synthetic oil it'll come back down next period (mid November ish). Tyre inflators, good Christmas presents, no?

I only get wound up when people use it without justification... in this case however I have to agree with you :thumbdwn:

I think that's pretty much the textbook answer.

I'll be shot of it by then tbh, I've had the same chat with Roto and I can appreciate what has been said, the oil I use is used to feed a 300BHP V6 engine so I'm confident it is man enough for the PD engine, you hear a lot of scaremongering also though, one guy told me it needed 505 oil cos the injector loom in the head gets eaten by other oils, if there is any truth in this I just couldn't say, but a friends Passat which has covered over 200k has had a diet of 10/40 and 0/30 oils, normally Fuchs iirc and it still hasn't given any trouble yet.

Correct, the branding is just playing with marketing. If you change at 10k or sooner then 505.01 or 507.00 will do. If you (unwisely) change later than 10k (variable) which is NOT advised by many, inc me, then 507.00 is the only choice.

Greg.

Backs up my theory, confuse, frighten and claim the market with your own oil brand, now who'da thought VAG would pull that one ?

Last time I checked, I could buy 5l 505.01 oil from Halfords for the same price when the time is right...in fact I bought 30l :D

Price is really no excuse not to use 505.01.

  • 2 weeks later...

I use this in my taxi's and right now costco has great deal on it £11 for 3l (3x1l bottles) so £22 for 6l plenty left over for top ups.
