Extra Power for 1.6

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I just ordered a Octy 2, 1.6 6-speed Tiptronic. This engine, fitted on a heavy octy is obviously underpowered. But from where I come from (Singapore), there isn't much options. Perhaps, some can share on what are the possible power upgrade without rendering the warranty void. Thanks. :)

Remove all dead weight. Easiest mod to do.

Can obviously do that. But I understand that Octy2 weighs in at 1,295kg as compared to a typical 1.6 litre car that weighs only about 1-1.1 ton. It has got a body of a 1.8-2 litre car. Was told of possible ECU upgrade that can give extra power of about 10%. Have also heard of the installation of a turbo, though I am sure that will void the warranty. Perhaps, someone in the forum can shed some lights on some possibilities? :)

As already said the best option is shed the weight. To get more power out of the 1.6 you would be talking serious modifications at serious expense. That would, as you say, void your warranty.

You could try a panel filter or induction kit but you'd barely notice the difference.

cancel it and buy somthing turbocharged. Dog of an engine in a heavy body is a pointless tuning exercise - if thats what you want to do you have bought the wrong car. N/A small petrol engine = sweet f a tuning

as for tuning it and having a warranty- no hope.

I have driven one and it did not seem too bad, so just see how you get on with it :)

they are not too bad a car. but as a tuning prospect...... no point.

I'd cancel it and go for a 1.8T or another car with more power.

A 1.6 Octy II all up and heavily loaded is going to struggle keeping speed.

cheezemonkey - have you seen the price of cars in Singapore !?

if you screw the engine ie take it somewhere near the rev limiter in 1st, 2nd, 3rd you will make very good progress and it will always feel fast.

Good point, Gilesme.

Just to give you guys a short brief on the price of car in Singapore:

(In GBP)

Octy 2, 1.6 - 25,000 (no version for 1.4TSI, 1.8TSI, or any of the TDI range)

Superb, 1.8T - 33,000

VW Golf 1.4TSI - 36,500

Audi A4 2.0MU - 50,000

Audi A4 1.8T - 55,000

I got my octy at a special discounted price of 20,000

(No power window, centre locking)

I remember working out there 10 years ago - we were being chauffered around in the chief exec's mercedes E class - cost a serious amount of money.

Strangely though, I understand that car hire is quite cheap !?

emigrate and buy a proper car.

Good god, they are all tiny engine specs and not so tiny prices..

The 1.4TSI will have some real go and the A4 1.8T won't be too bad, but the Superb 1.8T and the octy II 1.6 would struggle when going heavily loaded.

Let me see, about 10 years ago, an E-class would have cost about 85,000 pounds. You are probably aware that there is a car quota system in Singapore. We have to bid for a COE (Cert of Entitlement) before the purchase of a car. Adding to that is an import tax of 275%. At its peak, an E-class 200 would have cost about 100,000 pounds. The highest COE bidded was about 42,000 pounds, that was about 12-13 years ago. At present, the same car cost just below 70,000 pounds.

I bought my first Octy 5 years ago at 30,000 pounds. And that was a test driven car. Must say I had excellent memory of it. Simply love the car.

Not too sure the rates for car hire as compared to UK. A typical E200 should cost about 100 pounds a day. How is it like in UK?

Guess what, this is a common phase used by Singaporean car lovers. Honestly speaking, would love to actually. But uprooting means a huge change in lifestyle. If I am a bachelor, no issue. Got a mrs to take care of, plus family. Cheers. ;)

You are not alone... :) in Norway the prices are approx the same, a vRS would cost 36000 £, and thats the std spec.... Norwegian taxes are extremely high...

Start a revolution then.

"Revolution" !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless you are prepared to spend sometime in jail due to "defamation" of the ruling party, or be prepared to be declared bankrupt, or to escape from the country altogether. A huge price to pay!!!!!!!!!

Politics aside, fyi, Singapore is only a small island (650 sq km, to be exact). Driving from East to West on the highway takes only about 30 minutes. Considering its side, it is understandable that a car quota is needed. That is one of the "sacrifices" to make, staying in a city well known for its relatively low crime rate.

Anyway, what are we talking about! Let's get back to the car issue. Hope to hear a bit more from "experts" regarding the "Extra power for the 1.6". Putting aside the warranty issue, as the upgrade can come after the warranty period anyway. Please "SHOOT". :D

Remove the spare, jack and wrench and put a puncture repair kit in, fit lighter alloy wheels, lighter brake rotors (if available), remove one horn, any other weight you might figure you don't need. This will all affect acceleration and is easy and cheap enough to do.

If you can tolerate an unstable idle you can also try a lighter flywheel.

Then, working on the engine, fit a cold air intake with a low restriction filter element, lower restriction exhaust and, if you can get away with it, no cat.

You could try that remap, but being a small aspirated petrol you won't get further than 7-10 hp out of that.

Rather than the turbo, I'd shop for a compressor, but both are probably just as unlikely to exist for the 1.6 MPI engine, since it's got no real upgrade potential.

You could also try a ram air intake, especially if you fancy hood scoops, but that will only add some power once you have a decent speed going, not good for the low range.
