Just been quoted £120 for an oil and filter change on a Octavia 1.9tdi. This seems a bit steep to me.

Opinions ?

Steep ??????.....it's an absolute rip-off !!!!!!

Bring it up to Wakefield, and I'll do it for a tenner plus parts !!!!

Easy there tiger before you go shouting rip off. :D

OP - Have you been quoted £120 for a service interval? If so then that will include a little more than just the oil change.

Regardless of that, the oil used in the PD engine(if yours is PD) is probably around £60 of that plus around £8 for a filter and sump washer. you can see it all mounts up.

Thanks guys. Stu ....

It's a 1.9Tdi and this is it's first service. Well not really a service as I specifically asked only for an oil change. It's just done 7k miles but with lots of stop start. I'm not confortable with the variable servicing and fully intended to replace the long life oil after a year and switch to fixed servicing intervals.

I've topped up with non long life oil. The Service Manager did try to talk me out of having the oil changed.

I've pretty much always done the servicing on my older cars but not even looked where the sump plug is on the Octy.

Whats the job like ? If everything is easy to get to i'll do it myself and save £50.

Would this effect the warrenty in any way ?

Cheers !

If you've only done 7k miles then I'm guessing it's a newish car in which case IMHO it would be silly to do the work yourself. Yes you would invalidate the new car warranty to an extent and what that extent was would depend on the claim you made at the time, if any, and Skoda's view on it.

I would think they have quoted you for a 10k/12 month interval service which does include an inspection as well.

There are other good reasons for using Skoda Servicing, some of which are -

You'll have access to fully trained technicians and the backup of the franchised dealership.

You'll be putting some money into your local dealership to ensure they remain in a position to trade and offer you a service in the future.

Your car should be 'brought up to date', by that I mean if there are any service bulletins that apply to your car they should be carried out.

Skoda often offer goodwill gestures on out of warranty repairs to customers with full service history.

Overall the choice is yours, it's your investment.

Thanks Stu thats pretty much what I wanted to hear. I'll leave the booking as it stands :-)

FWIW I think it's a good move, not sure I like this long life servicing especially on Turbo Diesels.

To be fair, with me pumping the oil out on another VAG car and changing it the cost was £50 including a new air filter.

The oil filter from a dealer is about £5 and the air filter is about £10.

The oil is about £40 for a 5L tin and you will use 4.

Add to that if you take the sump plug out that's another £1 for a new sump plug, plus they have to take the under tray off and you can soon see where the full hour comes from.

If you DIY you will need some drive up ramps and the sump plug or a pela type oil extractor. You will need a 32mm shallow socket and all the other tools.

£120 isn't cheap, but it's not as awful as you think.

I used to run the variable servicing but i think an extra oil change at half way is a good thing as the engine is much smoother, quieter and generally happier after the change.

It sounds about right to me.

Agree

Investment? a car's never an investment, it is a tool to get from a to b :)
