Another little but annoying repair job successfully completed......

Featured Replies

The glove box lamp which only works when the sidelights are on did not switch off when you close the lid. Now it does, because the switch on the lamp was incorrectly fitted.

Now I'm beginning to understand why the previous owner wanted to change the car, and he saw things starting to go wrong. They're all very minor though, and have cost me nothing to put right.......

What did u do. Mine is the same. Bloody thing doesn't go off when I close the glovebox

Same here.

and here! I assumed it was normal?

hmm, did you have to drill a hole in the lid to check it had went out?? :P

I'm not the OP, but I had this problem. Basically theres a lug on the light that is pushed by the lid. It then separates the switch contacts to turn out the light. On mine, the lug was not being pushed far enough, so I wrapped some insulating tape arround it to make it move a bit more when the glovebox closed.

You can see the light spill on to the floor if you're sat in the passenger seat

I spent a while modifying the spring on mine... Wrapping tape around it makes more sense and would be much easier!

i just removed the lamp unit!

needed a hole for USB and ipod cable.

Remove the glove box by loosening the five T20 screws. Remove the plug on the lamp, and then remove the lamp itself. There is a lever on the side of the lamp which is pushed back as the lid is closed. It has a spring which allows it to come forward when the lid is opened. The spring also bridges two contacts to put the lamp on, and breaks one of them to put the lamp out. A little bit fiddly but quite simple really.....

Went through the car the other day doing all the things that I kept putting off. I had the same problem so I replaced the spring with a slightly stiffer one. It also stopped a minor rattle in the glovebox too.

Also replace a cracked speaker grill, the bulb in the heater control panel and even the bulb in the ashtray.

Some of these 'nothing jobs' are somehow more satisfying than the bigger ones!

Same solution I came up with, after the dealer failed to fix it :)

Another one found today.

My boot lamps would flicker on and off, and I knew that there was a bad earth connection somewhere, I just didn't know exactly where. Well today the left hand boot lamp went off completely, but would come on at random.

I located the earth return for both lamps to a common return beneath the CD auto-changer. The four wires which should all be joined together fell apart in my hand. I re-connected them, and soldered them for good measure and hey presto, they work fine now.

It gets better though. Before, when I opened the boot the red tell-tale lamp on the dash didn't light up. It does now, and also when I unlocked the car it would lock automatically after 30 seconds if none of the passenger doors had been opened. It would still lock itself even if the boot had been opened, making it possible to lock my key in the boot. Now opening the boot is the same as opening a passenger door. It will not lock itself.

Another good job done.......
