Is it safe to drive with 1 wheel nut missing?

Featured Replies

Last tuesday i had 2 new front tires fitted. Just been cleaning my rims when i noticed a locking wheel nut missing. Is it ok to drive on just 4 nuts or am i just being paranoid? Iwill have to go to the garage to see if they still have the nut or i will be buyin a new set. thanx

with 4 you should be ok, if you were down to 3 then I would be concerned. However getr the missing one replaced ASAP, I believe you can buy a single one from the dealer for a few pence.

There was always the old trick of taking a nut each off three wheels to fit the fourth after kicking those nuts down the drain, and that would more or less work for a short while.. unless you were driving a french car :) 1 from 5 should be ok for the time being.

Check the others for tightness and replace the missing one ASAP, but you will be OK for a short while.

I had a broken wheel stud once on an old Datsun 280ZX and drove around with just 3 wheel nuts on that wheel for 6 months

I'd be checking the others are on tight ASAP.

I've had a car that a garage didnt, and luckily I caught them on their last few threads! Oh, and the same place then threaded one of them too, so needed the HUB sorting.

I have a few spare nuts lying around if you want one...

The police recovered a stolen car from behind my old house in Manchester. When it was dumped it had two wheels still on it, by the time it was picked up it had none. Fortunately the recovery guy had four spare wheels, but he only had four or so bolts - It looked like a clown car as he hauled it onto the back of his truck and he did it very carefully.

Least the scum that dumped it didn't set fire to that one.

Just been to the garage where i had my tires changed and told them what had happened. He said they will sort me out a new set of locking wheel nuts and replace the plastic cap which covers the nuts! Hopefully he means it as he said he will call me to confim everything!

i recently bought a damaged gsi and had it towed all the way home on its back wheels. found out when we got home that the locking wheel nut had snapped off at some point, but the aa guy wasnt bothered about it, said he'd towed home much worse before lol!

For a start, I would have taken one off the rear wheel....
