Sky netgear router range issue

Featured Replies

In-laws have just switched to Sky, and I set up their wireless to run the supplied Netgear router.

The channel is preset at 6 (very odd) and the range is dire. It drops regularly, and I suspect the other sky routers in the road to be the issue.

But can anyone confirm how to get in to the routers admin, and if I can what channel to set to? Can I extend the range using any settings in there?

I think left their old one on 1, and never had any issues.

When I had Sky I retrived the login details and used my Linksys one, more reliable.

Thanks Stu.

I'll take a peek when I can next get over there

I've just got one, Wireless was pre-set on Ch11, which I've changed.

Range is fine, full signal throughout the house!

And it's really very helpful that they don't supply the user/pass for the routers admin section out of the box :(

Any Ideas for some good channels?

They have a wireless dect sitting next to it, hence the reason I think ch6 is acting up.

Away from every one else!

Wifi channels overlap, so make sure whatever channel you use isn't close to another that's being used:

Yup, you need to scan to see what everyone else is on. Ideally you need 3 clear channels between you and the nearest - also in Europe (and Japan) we go up to 13(and 14).

It might help to download Netstumbler for free and see what else is broadcasting near you. You also want to make sure you're not using any high speed modes as they'll generally get affected more by interference - pinning it to 54mbps is fine.

have you scanned to see if anyone else is using wifi and if so what channel they are on? my neighbour where i use to live decided to use the same channel as me and it wasnt till one night when i connected to the net and decided to go to admin settings that i realised that the belkin admin page was his router and not mine (mine is another companies) oh what fun i could have had if i wanted to be nasty mawhahaha...

username is usally admin and password is sky I think

I had an issue with my linksys router when my neighbour set up his wi-fi, but then once my wireless channel was changed all was OK.

Range is OK for me as I dont really feel like browsing from the back garden, we did have a few good days when I could have done.

Back to topic Netgear ADSL modem/routers seem to be great now.

I had a netgear router which was troublesome until I changed it for the Linksys I have had for the past 3 years.

I'm running the Netgear Rangemax-N router and after I changed the channel setting, I can get a signal halfway down my street.

I think I'll stick the sky router one 1 and see how goes.
