I Want A Phaeton

Featured Replies

Well, I've now had the pleasure of sitting in a Phaeton.

It was nice for sure, but didn't live up to the hype if I'm honest. The quality of materials isn't what I was expecting, the layout is confusing, and some of the bits like cupholders are pretty poor imho. :(

Risky...

I have a policy of never getting in any car better than mine. This reduces temptation and helps to keep money in my bank account.

Whatever, I still like them... and I stand by my original statement of them not being a "sensible" car.

(Lummox, I hope you didn't give him an actual heart attack...)

BTW, why do you need to fix the hazard switch? Surely, for MOT purposes, you would only need a switch which would activate them...why does that have to be OE?

It's all about the V10 TDi though!

Do the TDi models have he dreaded DPF's in them?

I would think so.

If anyone was to go for a model, which one would you have. I'd like the V8 but these are rare. I'd read reports on other forums of the V10 TDi killing gearboxes so that model I think is out....

Look at an A8 maybe, the 4.2 V8TDi is a better engine than the V10 TDi anyway, the only downside being that you don't get a cool V10 TDi badge on the back.

Thought about an A8, but I just like the Phaeton. God im mad!

I must admit I love the Phaeton myself such a cool car, but with my semi-sensible hat on they A8 makes more sense as parts are more cheaper and easier to find, also that 5.0 TDi unit is now defunct where as the V8 TDi's will be here to stay.

Whichever you get will be very cool!

Shame you aren't closer to me, I've got a trader who has got an A8 4.0TDi he had in part exchange and isn't his cup of tea so he wants out of it!

That's one way to say...oh fvck I'm gonna get stuck with it :D

The only one I would consider is the 3.0 V6 in auto form, best blend of economy and speed, 3.2 petrol could be another if it's cheap and an LPG kit can be found reasonable.

I'm still lusting btw, can't get it out of my head it's such a cheapo country club car.

I'll give him 10k for it....:D

It actually isn't much more than £10k. It's only done 49k!

List it up spec wise then James, colour and year, auto/man.

Yes please. Spec and colour and age....

Sorry my bad, just spoke to him. He's got an A6 TDi that is £10,800.

The A8 is £12,000.

FYI- The A8 is a 53 plate car done 48k in Dolphin Grey it's a 4.0TDi Quattro Tiptronic, usually spec plus from what he said on the phone it's got the better MMI system and the Xenon Plus headlamps which mean you get Bi-Xenon and LED rear lights which is standard on 05+ cars. I forgot to ask what colour the interior is, I presume it's a grey of some shade, as they always are with Audis.

In my case I would have to have the V10 TDI in a Phaeton or a Tuareg: Always fancied a car powered by a locomotive engine;) Running costs and Darling's Duty will be through the roof though.

How desperate does he want rid of it?

The A8 is £12k as a trade deal i.e dealer to dealer, so there is no movment on the price. But I know he doesn't want it he usually deals in sports cars like Boxters, 350Z, RX8 so big Audis aren't his bag.

There are some seriously cheap Phaetons around now...

HERE for example.

With reference to my previous post, here's the link to VW Vortex with a tour of the Phaeton factory:

VWvortex Forums: A Photo Tour of the Transparent Factory in Dresden

Just had a weekend in Dresden, SWMBO booked us a tour for the Friday just a few days before. The staff we met were very friendly and helpful, I highly recommend it, there was some re-building work going on, so the tour went around in slightly the wrong order and actually visited some parts that aren't normally open. Our guide seemed particularly enthusiastic as our 50 minute tour lasted 1h20m.

SWMBO never asked if there was an option of an English tour, as she routinely translates for me. When our guide realised I was English, he offered to contact an English group that was already going around the factory so we could tag along with them, however we declined as we didn't want to miss anything, plus It's the only way my German will improve.

There's strictly no cameras in the factory, however, it's definitely worth a visit. As we walked into town we were passed by one of the VW freight trams. Although we were on the wrong side of the road, so the foto was a backlit snapshot.

The whole city is well worth a visit, with lots of transport interest in the area, plus all of the famous museums etc in the old town.

cheers ... Darren

Supurbia,

I had 2 Mk1 Superbs back to back, and didn't get a Mk2 only because of the delay on the new Superb beng launched in terms of when my last one hit 3 years; read up on the car thoroughly and actually placed an order without ever sitting in one.

Best car ever to spend time in. Comfortable, fast, classy, understated, and really does put a grin on your face and leaves you in the most serene state, even if tackling the M25 twice a day on a 50+ mile commute. :) You just don't give a monkey's about traffic jams with a beautiful stereo, excellent climate control, and leather arm chair seats.

I bought a new 08 3.0 TDI LWB, 25% off list, suffered even further huge depreciation...and I don't care one bit. I just love driving this car!

40 MPG on a motorway cruise at a steady 80 in light traffic, historice average of 33.4 mpg over 21,000 miles, first service came up after 19,500 miles (£450 and i'm not sure it even need it...I've had a Golf, a Passat and 2 Superbs from new and all needed oil after about 8-9,000 miles. The Phaeton and the 3.0 TDI CR engine? sweet as a nut, engine sealed, only burnt off about 1/4 pint of oil in all that time).

Not a single squeak, rattle, knock, shake, vibration, to date. Not a single electric or mechanical fault. Hassle free haven of sanity from the outside world.

Oh and sluggish? 0 - 60 is not what's it's about (8.2 actually), but put it into Sports mode on the open road and the engine mapping, suspension settings and tranmission tightening just change the car from a sedate cruiser to a snarling beast. Put your foot down at 90 and let the kick down rev all the up to 4,000 in 5th and in just a few seconds you're doing close to 130 before it changes smoothly up into top.

It has plenty of power where it actually counts, backed up with Torsen (not VW Haldex) 4WD and excellent brakes to make it one of the safest vehicles to drive.

It is after all the forerunner of the Bentley as despite common mis-understandng, the Phaeton isn't built off the back of the Bently chassis and running gear, the Bentley was built off the Phaeton platform and likewise was the A8 excepting the contruct of materials (i.e. Aluminium in the A8 rather than crash proof, safety first steel as in the Phaeton - I know which one I'd rather be in if an accident happens).

As the new Phaeton being planned will be smaller (sub 5 metres) and more up market Passat rathen direct rival to its luxury end stable mates, I'm seriously considering buying another one when this model comes to end of life, mothball it whilst continuing to run the current one.

I don't think I could contemplate life without a Phaeton. :o

Sorry to waffle on about the Phaeton on a Skoda forum, but it's late, it's a Friday and I might be a bit tipsy, so that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it - plus today I spent 5 hours in the car going to, between and returning from 2 client presentations (one open road to Crawley, the other back into St. Johns Wood, central London on a Friday afternoon) and I didn't get stressed about the drive for a single second.

Where's the jealousy smiley?

I wonder if anyone has managed to put a 3.0 CR TDI in an Octavia?
