I Want A Phaeton

All the Phaeton engines are chain driven :)

Thx bud, that's the most important thing, and another bonus is they don't have any complaints against them, after nearly 5 yrs in production I'm sure if there were gremlins we'd know about it by now, but on the other hand do ppl who buy 45k cars know how to join a car forum to tell us? ;)

They have their fare share of problems, mainly electical. boot wiring loom issues are one that springs to mind. They aint devoid of faults but most of them are pretty common. But parts are very expensive, costed up a hazzard light switch the other day, £1600 believe it or not.

Given the cost of spares as Lummox just highlighted I'd be interested in a Warranty Direct style package for repair bills.

Out of interest though, if talking around £10k-£13k for the phaeton how do the running costs compare over 3 years with say the running costs of a new superb or mondeo. You might be pleasantly surprised once depreciation is taken into account...

If they did an estate I'd have one... :)

One of my mates is a lisenced mastertech at a VW garage, could maybe ask him about Phaeton particulars sometime if need be.

I like the Phaeton but always felt like it had very little presence on the road. It's not the badge I'm talking about, the car should speak for itself and not be a reflection of the badge it sports ... just you'd expect it to look more, menacing maybe? Powerful perhaps? Always thought if they beefed up the styling a tad it would have competed far better with the 5 series BMWs and larger Audis much better.

Almost like the Albert Einstein of the car world. Brilliant on the inside but it wouldn't WOW you in a pair of speedos.

I'm also painfully aware I just made a slightly gay analogy. Nevermind.

Slightly? :P

I think the Phaeton is simply awesome. I don't understand why the depreciation is so poor.

Oh well that's gone and killed it, out of curiousity I rang for a price on it, it would seem it's not just a switch but incorporated into a module behind it, and the price quoted for the unit was 3k  must be made of Platinum and Uranium, now my sensible head tells me with limited amounts of the cars around it's gonna be a new part rather than a scrapyard part should it go wrong, and I just can't risk it going wrong, when you look at it it's stupid pricing really, even if it was 200+ it would be a rip given that all it will be is a circuit board in a box, so I guess not many of these cars will get to live past 5 yrs old, it'll be once a failure of this sort ocours it will be uneconomic to fix it.

LOL, priceless. Good skills.

Yup. £3k for a new one but they do an exchange item for a bargain £1600. Its all built into the infotainment unit. Gave the owner a heart attack when i told him, ooops.

That'll be something to put on an extended warranty then..... Not sure what it covers but phaeton is covered by tesco's finest policy for £449 per annum

Our cover levels - Car warranty plan | Tesco Finance & Insurance

Anyone know what the service intervals are for one of these? My thinking is buy one from dealers that's just been serviced, run it until it next needs serviced and then trade it in for something more sensible. That way you might have had a stunning car for a couple of years.

Looks like 5k for 4 shocks from what I read, lovely as it is and the desire is still there I won't be getting one at those prices, it is a bespoke car and as such carries bespoke pricing, I thought it would compare with the Passat for the majority of it's spares plus a small premium, but looking deeper it looks like an all in one printer and if the print head goes you have to replace the lot rather than a single unit, not for me, maybe if they really fell through the floor and could be had relatively new with low miles for 5k I'd risk it and find a very good solderer to repair any of the electric units that fail.

If they could be had for £5K, just buy two and use the second for spares! :D:D

I am gobsmacked by the price of spare parts, I wonder if it just a 'rip off Britain' thing and they can be sourced cheaper in Germany. Those prices must be akin to exotica spare costs (Ferraris/Lambos), it doesnt make sense.

why all the carping, you bloody tight wad skoda drivers... do you think the electronic / air suspension on any other car is much cheaper to replace? get a quote for the same on an E or S class / 5 or 7 ser / audi / Citroen C6 / et al......

all modern cars are horrifically exp to fix @ 5yrs old... that is why they depreciate at the rate they do... cos you have to be prepared to park it and walk away when it fails an mot or need a major service....

I can't honestly see a Phaeton needing big repair bills very often. If you are worried about the occasional/annual £1500 bill then its the wrong car for you :P

The hazard switch is an extreme example tbh.

It is yeah, it was just an example how the hazzard switch itself wouldnt be very expensive, its just built into something else which is how these things are these days.

I'm not so sure tbh Tom, if you read the guy's suspension thread it had only covered 54k iirc, not what you call big miles for such an expensive part, anyway that's that little dream over for now

Don't let this thread die, use it to discuss the car, I'm still smittem and I think in the next 12 mths I will have one, right now I look at it in the same light as a porn star, female one that is ;)

Not sure which *ahem* adult sites *ahem* you've been looking at, but I struggle to see the connection, unless, of course, Phaeton is a euphemism for something I'm unaware of :D

@ jlwah.....

I guess I mean I wanna ride in it more than once :D

@ Fabia

Too rich for me, I'm banking on the eco warriors making it a very cheap car sometime soon, it's an economic nightmare for me really, it'll do 23mpg overall cost £400 to tax and want the finest boots, but if the purchase cost is right I can whole package budget it, thx anyway though.:)

I'm not looking at posts about The Phaeton for the next 12 months! You'll have changed your mind by then anyway!
