Coming up against rival cars on the road

Featured Replies

In these forums (and others) I read about owners worrying about what would happen if their car came up against a rival from another brand, and also stories of how they pulled ahead or got beaten. Suggestions are given on how to get more speed or get off the line faster, and somtimes there are tales of victory as bigger and more expensive machines are despatched on the road.

Now, this is where I start to worry a bit...

Even in a 1.4 TDI Fabia estate, 60 (or 70) MPH comes up very fast, and the 0-60 times of most cars are only a few seconds apart. So, what are these posters actually doing? Are they crashing through the speed limits until one of the cars speed starts to tail off compared to the other? Are they 'playing chicken' between roundabouts with the throttle mashed in 2nd or 3rd gear?

Occasionally I give someone a bit of a challenge if they have been tailgating me and then at the lights they take the right hand lane, but although I may get away sooner, they pass me by travelling over the posted limit to gain the advantage.

In recent years I note more and more people hurtling at crazy speeds in their cars, and last week I dived for the hedge after a Subaru?, barely in control, shot at max velocity down a tiny road:eek:, and now walking at night is dangerous as cars are coming off the road FAR too often for my liking.

I cannot tell anyone what not to do, but next time you see a car that is obviously pushing you and wanting a reaction, think twice - and let them make their own stupid mistakes without you.

I would hope that Briskoda members are far above posting ****e. My comments come from experience on the road and from the heart.

Not questioning your motives at all sir, but from past experience threads like these tend to degenerate rather quickly.

i think its far to risky to race other cars these days, one its illegal and two there are to many unmarked cars of which some have been known to egg drivers on by getting to close etc only to blues n twos them in when they make a break. A lot of the drivers who do race are often racing beyond their limits and for the road conditions and many couldnt tell you how much road they would need if they had to do an emergency stop at those sort of speeds. just watch things like police camera action and see how many drivers think they are better than the police yet loose it.

Personally since doing my IAM ive calmed down alot on the road, yes i take it easy most of the time too because of what ive learnt ive found i will get to my destination in just the same time as ch@v racer, less stressed and more fuel in my tank.

Last night I was nearly run off the road by a new M3 that undertook the driver behind me then overtook me, cutting us both up in the process, before driving at what looked to be at least 70 on the wrong side of a main road past the next ten cars and head on towards an oncoming vehicle. Then he did exactly the same thing on the next road he turned onto.

If we get morons like that horsing about when there's absolutely no reason, then I hate to think what chances they'll take when their puny little.. egos are at stake.

Indeed, this thread went downhill on the first reply!

Go ahead punk, make my day :grumpy:

If they look like they are looking for a drag race I'll sometimes give the impression I'm up for it. Then drive off no faster than normal or possibly even slower. Meanwhile they race off on their own looking like a right tit.

If you want to race me away from the lights fine go for it you'll win. I really couldn't give a stuff that your car is faster.

If they want to race, let 'em race. I just hope I'm not expected to stop and pull them out of the wreckage, and I'm not held up in my journey by being a witness to their idiocy.

In my book a good, fast driver shouldn't stand out from normal traffic -but he still gets there first.

I think the biggest factor in been able to 'say no' when someones trying to get you to race is experience and/or age!

I'm only 28 now but I'm sure when I was 20 and in my 1st car I'd have a go with anything because thats what your like when you're young!
