Travelsickness

Featured Replies

Do you get travel sick?

I do, and it's horrible. Coaches are the worst for me - I start off by yawning and then comes the tight chest, then the tingling under the tongue and then it is too late.:orb_sick:

What is worse is that no matter what I do it won't go away. Deep breaths, sucky sweets, looking out the window - all to no avail. It is a real embarassment too - having to apologise to those next to me for my eruption. I could use travel sickness tablets, but they make me sleepier and dizzier, which speeds up the process of sickness. On holiday abroad, when you need to use coaches, I really dread it. On the coach from Kiev to Chernobyl I had to use my rucksack:(.

I even got sick rowing MYSELF in a rubber dinghy.

So, is there any other suggestions of products or actions you have tried or used that may actually help me. If you have any - please do share.

I'm the same, If i'm not driving I 'm a lousy passenger. I'm ok flying and sailing though.... it's just any form of motorised land vehicle. I haven't found a solution yet either, well apart from actually being the driver.

Oh yes, something terrible.

No so bad in a car or bus but boats give me the boak.

We had a really rough crossing on honeymoon to our island in the Maldives. 2 people had to go chunder.

What I normally do is get air, and try to see the horizon. Look at teh horizon because it stays fixed and helps to sort out the problem between brain and ear that causes motion sickness.

I couldn't see the horizon on the boat and it was very stuffy so I thought I had no chance.

I remembered about a pressure point in your wrist pretty much where you'd try to take a pulse. Push firmly on that. It worked for me (just). You get bands with beads to put the pressure on for you.

That worked plus concentrating on the horizon when I could see it. I couldn't speak or anything on that trip I just had to look out the window and go to a happy place.

I feel a bit queezy remembering it

Nope, I can even read while travelling

I have never suffered, apart from the time I was in my dads car and could smell the

exhaust fumes coming through a hole in the interior trim.

I find having a full stomach helps.

i knew someone who was bad at travelsickness they couldnt drive dowm motorways.... ended up going to a hypnosis thing for it..... and it worked.... not sure of the details

"I couldn't speak or anything on that trip..."

Amen. On the plane to the USA I was so bad that I pretended to be foreign so I did not have to speak to my next door (talkative) passengers. I thought I was doing OK until the smell of greasy croissants circulated through the plane's aircon and then it was brown paper bag time.

So far we have:

Full stomach, pressure points and hypnotherapy.

Any more?

do like the a-team do to b.a..... lol

I've heard that trying to be in a position where you can see where your going, if you know what I mean. Maybe even have rasberry jam on tiast, or similar. At least it may taste better coming back...lol

OK - will chase up the bands. They sound a good idea.

It's not just being ill that is unpleasant, it is the long and ardious build-up to it. Sometimes the journey finishes just in time, and all is OK, but really it is no fun at all and those who suffer have my full sympathy.

To the sufferers, do you notice detail perception increases the more sick you feel? For me, when I am starting to feel rough I start seeing things like a trodden in bit of chewing gum, a missing screw in the window frame, the person in front's bald spot or a smudge on the window in great detail - all things that went unnoticed when I felt OK earlier. Don't know why that is....

It's just the mind trying to focus on something to forget about the current situation....

When i started working offshore the tip for seasickness was to sit under a tree. In a field.

Would that not be "imagine you were sat under a tree, in a filed"

You mention the build up is an issue aswell. Do you mean you find yourself feeling anxious? If so, then try hypnotherapy or ask your GP for a benzo (Diazepam) to take before hand. Try that along with the wrist bands.

Also, try eating small amounts regularly.
