Engine Cover Going Walkabout

Featured Replies

Had a quick search on the subject but nothing came up, so perhaps someone can suggest a cure.

Got a vRS TDi and on several occassions I have opened the bonnet to find the engine covers (it's in two parts) are sitting at an angle across the engine.

They have moved c45 degrees clockwise.

I keep locating the securing (or non-securing in this case) pegs in to the relevant retaining holes but it keeps happening.

Just had the car serviced and asked the dealer to fix. However, 2 days later and the same has happened again!

If the dipstick was not so prominent, I think the cover could slide off all together!

Any member able to point me in the right direction for a fix?

Have to agree with you there. Was checking the oil level of my vRS TDI last night and was shocked to how far the engine cover had moved. Ususally it does move about a bit but as you say the dip stick keeps in relatively in place. But last night the cover had jumped completely over it and was nicely wedged against the air filter.

Dealer already replaced one of the twon pieces following the last service so any fix would be great

Yes yes me too !!!!!

I don't think this is the same thing, but are you talking about a cover on the engine itself or a cover that fits on the underside of the bonnet? My golf had this on and it did help reduce the engine noise. Does anyone know if Skoda make a model which has the underside padding on as i'd like to get it and fit it on the underside of MY bonnet.;)

I had this problem last year when my car was new; it would manifest itself by an increase in engine noise! Even carefully locating the inner cover first followed by the outer one didn't help; they would still pop off and float around on top of the engine.

My solution, as I couldn't be bothered to go to my dealer, was to fit a couple of strategically placed long 4mm wide cable ties. ;) No problem since.

I even noticed, following a 1st year/18,000 mile service, that the cable ties had changed (different colour). Clearly my dealer had removed the cover during the Service and replaced the cable ties!

From a design point of view; either the 'bulb' on the end of the pin that locates into the rubber grommet needs to be larger, or the grommet needs to be tighter, or both, or a different, screw/bolt, method of fixing be used (as on the Fabia). Mind you that would add 2.35 minutes to the production time and £1.48p to the production cost; probably not. :D

Has this problem has been addressed on the CR engine? Is the PD140 engine cover any different?

The actual engine cover, not the bonnet lining.

PD140 doesn't move at all !!

How is it fixed/secured?

The two part engine covers are awful. They never stay put on the GT either so your not alone, what they were thinking when they designed that who knows.

How is it fixed/secured?

Well, I have to see it later today and tell you.

I assume you mean the underbonnet insulating pad?

From a thread I posted at another forum

Also got the underbonnet sound absorber pad. 4 weeks from order to delivery.

For those of you with 1.8Ts the part# is 1Z0863831.

The clips are a separate partno.

Fitting takes 10 minutes if you have 10 left thumbs & are blind. If nothing else, it makes the underbonnet area look more "finished".

PD 140 has a locating bolt at the back that one part slides down onto then the rest push down onto bolts coming up from the engine.

Nice and secure too :)

Be careful what you wish for .........................

Our Golf owning brethren are always complaining how difficult it is to remove their engine covers, and several have actually broken them in their efforts to get them off

As it happens I have just removed and refitted my cover in my lunchbreak, to ease the fitment of a Neuspeed 'short-shifter'. :D:thumbup:

Looking carefully at the design of the cover and its fixings, I believe the culprit is the conical basket/grommet that the locating pins of the cover go into, which in the majority have lost their suppleness and split; rendering them less than useless.

Get this 20p piece of plastic sorted and I think we would all be OK.

Petrol ones are a mare to get off (got a slightly broken TFSi one in the shed as testiment to this), diesel ones in particular the 170 engine however fall off.

The rearmost one (when looking, top/rear left) doesnt actually engage on mine - i got fed up of mine coming off every other day, and the inner one splitting, so removed them altogether... No more problems

Yes, checked mine today, that's the way it's fixed

The "pinholders" for the cover used to be out of a harder kind of plastic. They do have newer ones, that are more rubberylike.

These will last a bit longer.

Had mines already a couple of times replaced. My cover was already loose (on two spots) on delivery .

My dealer ordered a set of new ones and gave them to me, after I made some remarks ;)

Here is a pic a member of the Octavia board in Germany made, with the newer pinholder:

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Obviously I am not alone on this one.

Weekend is here so will see what can be done to make it more secure.

Might even just take it off. Do you think this would noteably increase the engine noise?

Might even just take it off. Do you think this would notably increase the engine noise?

Yes; but worth trying for the fun of it.

May mean your engine gets dirty as well; surprising the dust/dirt that collects on the cover.

Do you think this would noteably increase the engine noise?

No, the rattly old Diesel is just as loud with them on. If you can tell a difference, you must be a fecking Bat.

  • 4 months later...

any1 know if the engine cover were to fall off the top of the engine completely and slid into the actual engine bay, would it/could it cause any long term damage. Also can it be fixed on without the use of cable ties? Maybe take it back to skoda and get it fixed on under warranty?

cheers
