I am sure there is a bank close by, it would be simple enough to conclude the transaction at a bank where they could hand over the money and you could hand over the keys/Paperwork etc.

I understand that you really want to get rid of the car, but meeting a buyer like this is potentially very risky. There are some shocking stories where sellers have lost both their car and the money when meeting like this.

Be especially wary if the buyer doesn't really seem that interested in having a test drive.

When I did a deal like this, I insisted that the buyer deposit the funds direct into my account (via bank transfer). I then phoned the bank, and verified the funds were cleared before releasing the car. Any legitimate buyer should be prepared to consider this.

What time are you planning on meeting him?

its a tricky one - not wishing to pigeon hole people- he is a chinese gentleman and deals in cash. we are meeting in a busy shopping centre car park so i think this helps.

going to the bank sounds good.

james - 4pm in the trafford centre (shopping centre)

Going to the bank is a great idea, but I doubt if many will be open at 4pm on a Saturday. Could you re-arrange it for earlier in the day?

the halifax at the trafford centre are open - sort off. they dont have a "counter" service but have paying in machines that i could use. it would be neutral territory and inside with loads of people about.

At least there will be a few other people around. Might be worth having a third person if possible to come along just to sit in another car and not make himself known, just in case something does happen. Although at 4pm in a shopping centre there isn't much that can go wrong.

You should be fine- Good luck with the sale!

definatley get at least one more person there in a car parked close by.

no offence but i have also heard of this type of thing. the guy turns up buys the car hands you the cash, then as your about to get into your car his friends turn up and take the money quickly and before youve got chance to do anything they are away and gone!

as has been said i would have prefered doing it at the bank. at least there they could confirm the monies legit.

Selling a car.......Not using a bank.....:thumbdwn:

M2C from Sweden.......Good luck btw......

I asked a banker the best way to go about this a week ago. The answer was arrange a 'CHAPS' transfer (think that's the right name - check with the bank), if the transfer is made before 2.30pm funds are usually in your account that day. Check the money has cleared before releasing keys. Better still is pay the money into a branch of your own bank and transferred in front of you. Once the money is accepted and a transfer arranged you don't need to worry about counterfeits.

If you walk into a bank with a wadge and its not normal for you then they might start to ask questions due to money laundering legislation.

Depending on who you bank with, the post office may take a deposit for your bank account...for example I know you can deposit into a barclays account via the post office.

thanks. found out that the TSB are open at the trafford centre till late. i have an old account with them that i dont use but still have it so might as well use it. got myself one of those counterfeit note checking pens as well !!!

Another good idea is to take a picture of the buyer, sounds a bit silly but if anything did go wrong at least you will have a photo of him.

  • Author

yes - i thought of that too...but then forgot again so thanks for reminding me !!! will take his car reg as well. asked him to bring his driving licence so i can check his address

I'd agree with others, sounds risky/dodgy.

The other issue not already mentioned is checking the cash is actually legit. The time taken could be just enough time for you to get scammed badly.

Maybe A brisky stake out's in order? I can see the News24 interviews now.....

So........ did you sell it?

Chinese bloke probably got really worried with all the precautions he took and called the old bill. He's probably in a cell!!

  • Author

nope - not in a cell. i am here and alive !!!

sold the car. got the cash. paid it in.

wasnt 100% straight forward as we met on sat but he didnt have enough cash...here we go i thought...but turns out he rolled up at the bank and didnt give them notice and they have a daily cash withdrawal limit !!! anyhow he looked at the car - drove it round B&Q carpark and said he wanted it !! gave me a £200 deposit and we agreed to meet again today. wife and kids came home and i stayed over at the inlaws then met him at stockport station to do the deal. i had a very nervous train journey from stockport to lincoln with £7500 in cash in my bag as i didnt have time to get to the bank before my train left. the cash is nor safely in the bank and i am off to choose my options list for the superb. he was a bloody student as well - A6 Quatto 3.2 for a student !!! he was actually a really nice guy.

Glad you got it all sorted

been a stressful weekend !! wish i could have traded it in but i got about £1500 more than trade in value so worth the hassle i think. all i need now is a skoda dealer who will give me 15% of list and i will be very happy !!!

Glad it worked out. I think I would have been sh*tting myself if I had £7500 in cash on my person.
