Oil?

Featured Replies

Hello, can someone in the know please clear up my confusion over which oil to put in my 1.4 tdi 80 (non dpf). I read on here 10w40 conforming to 505 01 standards.

However whenever I find oil fitting 505 01 online they are 5w 40. Is this stuff ok or does it need to be 10w40. If anyone has a spare litre in their boot (or shed) could you please enlighten me as I'm very unsure as to what to buy. Any specifics would be fantastic too such as brand etc. Thank you

Jaxx mate...congrates on getting the new car. You're gonna love it! You probably won't need to top up the oil, but my motor...same as yours came from the factory, I am told by my dealer with Shell 5-40 diesel specific, fully synthetic oil meeting the very important VW spec for our motors of course. Unfortunately, I'm not much help as I cannot remember the spec numbers and I don't have any of the correct Shell oil in the garage. However, I've done nearly 2000 miles and she hasn't used any detectable amount of oil so I doubt I'll need any.

Just remember not to go too easy on her with the throttle (but avoid big bootfuls) and vary the speed and revs often (with due regard to the rev limits in the owners manual) and she'll bed in a treat with good piston ring to bore seal. Don't forget, diesels have a hard time bedding in. Unlike petrol engines where the petrol acting as a solvent tries constantly to wash the oil away from the pistons and rings, the diesel fuel acts as a constant lubricant for the pistons, rings and bores, that's aside from the fully synthetic oil put in at the factory. So make sure you give it plenty of work to do otherwise she just wont bed her rings in and she'll use oil during her life and won't give full performance. Errr...sorry, rambling a bit here, just noticed how long this is and you probably know all that stuff anyway...

Thank you for that. I have been taking the car to 2500 rpm a few times each journey when it's warmed up. Not using full throttle though. I hope this constitutes not going too easy. If not what do you suggest???

I'll search for some shell oil when I get time. Thank you again.

Perfick! But as the miles go on let the revs go up a bit more to 2750rpm then a few miles later...to 3000rpm by at least the 3 to 400 mile mark and increase the load and duration held at those revs by a bit more each time. Everyone tends to do there own thing when running in, and with todays engines that's pretty much ok. In fact, if you just drive it fairly normally you'll be ok but if you take a bit of extra care to make sure you work that engine, you will benefit. Just don't use full throttle until the manual recommends it. Make sure you read the manual and you won't go wrong.

Cheers bud...

Check your car - mine had a free litre bottle of oil in a plastic holder complete with dipstick wipes supplied with the car!

I've had the car 2 weeks now and I haven't stumbled across the pack lol. I wish the manual was more specific. There is no referance to a viscous rating, just that it must be 505 01 standard!

Hmm. Why not ask your local Skoda dealer? They should know what oil they use in their workshop!

I guess I will have to do that Jo. Thought it was worth a try on here cos there was confusion on here the other week about whether magnatec can be used or not. Castrol website says it doesn't comply with the 505 01 spec. If a dealer can get it wrong then I'm not sure what to do! Castrol site says only castrol edge 5w30 conforms to 505 01! Not magnatec.

Shell helix plus complies too 5w 30 but they both cost a fortune.

Sticking with Shell Helix will keep your engine in good condition. My Vauxhalls all used Shell Helix and our Cavalier got to 170,000 miles without major engine repairs. My Astra got to 86000 miles and wasn't using any oil whatsoever when she was part-exchanged at the Skoda dealer.

Cheap lubricants may have been okay when service intervals were short, but now we expect cars to do 10,000 miles plus between oil changes, and the bi-products of the diesel combustion are acidic, you need to use good quality lubricants to avoid expensive wear and tear later on. My Nova 1.5TD had its oil changed every 4500 miles, my diesel Corsa was able to go 10,000 miles on semi-synthetic oil.

So being curious, do you have a top up litre? If so is it helix super, plus or the poshest one. (can't remember it's name). Also is it 5w30 and is it fully synthetic or only part synthetic???

Sorry to keep on!!!

Yes, I got a litre of Shell Helix oil to top up in a black plastic case with the car. Mine is a petrol Fabia, so it may not be same oil as yours needs. I haven't bought oil myself since I had my old Cavalier and I got rid of that in 2001.

Great stuff!

:)

Don't worry about asking questions - you just want what's best for your new car. I can empathise with that!
