Performance enhancements for dummies...

Someone who usually avoids the oily bits writes...

OK, so I've got used to 180 bhp. At some point after April 27th I will have money again. What do I do?

Posts in 'My Performance' lose me because I don't know the difference between a 'chip' and a 'remap', a job done by Jabba or one by AMD. I just want a bit more 'go' and don't know how to go about it. Read the title of this post, I'm serious!

Something to consider. The chap who supplied my RS is a Superchips agent. Does anyone have an opinion?

Assume I know nothing. Help would be appreciated.

That sounds like me too . I also have been thinking along your lines , and have been tempted by the Revo chip ,you can have a free 5 hour trial , after which time it reverts back to stock mode - if you're impressed you have it done if not you don't . The price for the basic chip is

The best advice is that everyone is bound to have a different opinion about the merits of a) Different tuners and B) Different tuning methods; so c) Do you research here and on other 1.8T engine forums (Audi, VW, Golf, Seat) and make your own mind up.

I'll try and stay impartial as I've had tuning boxes, re-chips and a remap on various cars. I've just gone the Jabba route on my car - but I'll be very clear in saying that other tuners are capable of producing good results !!!

OK so here's my 10p worth:-

Remap (Generalising!)

The idea of a remap makes most sense to me where (depending on the model of car) the tuner either installs new software code on you existing ECU chip or installs a new chip and then adjusts the code to suit your particular car. All cars of the same model run slightly differently so if a remap is done properly, think of it as a custom-made suit - it should fit you better than a 42 long ! Most reputable tuners will run your car on a rolling road to check everything is in tolerances whilst the code is changed, and adjust accordingly.

Rechips

Can be an off-the-shelf chip with identical code suitable for everyone who owns a specific model of car.

As an example, I had an Audi 2.5 TDI Quattro with a German 'rechip' which promised a set gain on power and torque.

In the land of Subaru, Ecutek offer a combination of the two above. They provide a Tek2 which is a complete new ECU / rechip with standard code. You can then go and see them with your car and they will customise it to your car and other modifications (eg Exhaust etc) which then is called a Tek3 !

Another one to confuse you - the most expensive is not always the best...

Why not just talk to / visit a few tuners, as a start ?

Rich,

been "thinking" about rechipping/remapping myself for a little while now.

I liked the idea of REVO/APR due to the switch-ability i.e. changing between the standard ECU software and the "performance" software. However these are not customised to your car and in many ways are a compromise. They are both roughly the same price at around

  • 1 year later...

Hi all. Im new to this forum. I bought myself an Octavia Elegance 110 TDI last week (1 year old). Ive had two vw golfs before the Octavia, and im well impressed.

Anyway, Just wanted to ask has anyone looked into Upsolute remaps? I have been looking for a while now and have found that they advertise the same gains as the other tuners, but at about half the cost  .

Upsolute seem to have a very good reputation, and are worldwide (which is why they are so cheap) My nearest dealer is in Dublin, 100 miles away (I'm in Belfast) and has quoted me a price of 400 euro (its 450 on the upsolute web site) thats about

Since this original post, all the participants have been remapped by one tuner or another, but none of them is Upsolute ;)

first mods to do would be to get it breathing better, high flow air filter and better exhaust system. i know i have looked at the 4x4 exhaust and it has a hell of a restriction just before the backbox on one of the bends near the rear drive shafts. first thing that will be done is to try and source a better exhaust system for the car. filter could be done now, but would have to make sure the garage doesn't bin it at svc.

Wow! Blast from the past. Me thinking about Superchips and SkodiRS 'pretty much decided upon Jabba now'. LOL.

Flyingbanana, eventually  I went for better breathing first too.

a decent front mounted intercooler will improve the torque as well - colder charge and all that

Unfortunately (and don't hold me to this) a mod too far :(

the fmic is a mod too far??

Most on this site seem to have gone with the Jabba. I did.

I tried the Revo trial route but the cost swung it for Jabba and by god I'm not sorry at all. I thought the car had more torque, was smoother and more consistent then the Revo option. The boost controller I also opted for was a good investment in my eyes, especially if you want to hide the fact the cars been tuned from the missus (good job she doesn't read this). :o It's still a noticable change on minimum setting but wind it up and let your grin grow. :D

My only gripe is that I didn't do the exhaust and filter first, got the milltek on it's way and just hoping that it won't make much difference that it wasn't fitted first if you get my drift, any comments?

At the end of the day, all the main tuners offer the same sort of final product. But the custom remap is the best way to go for reliability and performance, generic chips just aren't up to much as every engine is different. You may be lucky and get a huge boost, you might not. Experience talking there. :(

Whatever you choose, you won't be disappointed. :D

Cost more than anything. I'm tempted but I was chatting to Eddy about this and I also have to think about the implications of a more 'permanent' mod. More or less everything I've done so far could be reversed in an afternoon. Small business needing cash in a hurry, that sort of thing. :( That frosty morning feeling virtually every day does have its attractions though.

I saw your other post. Personally I'd nip back to Jabba anyway. If you can ever 'nip' to Jabba. It'll just prey on your mind. You'll love the Milltek BTW :D

I fitted a spearco intercooler for an eclipse to my punto, ordered two from the states. delivered

Hi

I wonder if you can help. I saw your reference to a High Flow air filter, I own a 90 BHP TDi Octy 51 reg and was interested whether a replacement filter alone can improve mpg / performance albeit slightly. If so could you recommend a brand and supplier.

Thanks

Redeye :)

A green cotton filter would do the trick. Demon Tweeks do them, among others.

edit: Just noticed there is 21 months of time passed since this post and post #1.

Rich has well and truely turned to the dark side since posting that, LOL! Maybe he would care to add up what he has spent on mods since then, purely for my amusement of course! :D

have had my octavia vRS chipped by Simon Coe (upsolute).

very helpful (he came to me) total cost
