clonking noise when turning??

Featured Replies

When turning over you get a clonking noise and sensation through the steering wheel. Its not all the time its just when its a bit rough. I had the anti roll bar changed last year due to bangin noises. Can anyone point me in the right direction or is this normal?? thanks

Similar for me, new front ARB/drop links/console bushes last year and even now I got knocks and squeks etc from the front wheels/drive train when turning and also sensations/vibrations in the steering wheel. The steering wheel especially rotates a lot and wobbles a lot on its own if you let go of it whilst crawling along at 5 mph or so.

The car just passed its MOT with no advisories so I assume that the suspension in terms of rubber components, track rod ends and such like are all ok. A worn steering rack does seem common on this forum. I think the front wheel bearings being on their way might cause similar symptoms - you could try jacking each side up in turn and checking for free rotation and free play in the wheels?

Wozza i would suggest getting your droplinks looked at, same happened to me, was diagnosed as needing a new Steering Rack, but the drop links solved it. If they dont solve it then sounds like a new rack might be needed.

cheers mate. Iv got 6 months left of warranty so think i will contact skoda at some point again. its made that noise for the last 1 yr and 9 months of owning it but seems a bit worse than normal. Its been serviced and test driven enough times but no one ever mentioned there was a problem.

Loads of us have this problem and have no idea how to fix it.

I've changed:

ARB drop links

ARB bushes

Front struts

Track rods

Lower ball joints

Console bushes

and it STILL does it.

There's a load of threads on here for this - do a search for knocking on undulating roads and see what comes up.

To add, the test car at the local dealer with only 14k on the clock also did it when going over the same bumps on the same road. I'm thinking it's engine mount / steering column related as you can feel/ hear it through the wheel.

The car has been looked at by both the dealer and by Awesome in Manchester and neither could see anything wrong. :(

Basically Iv either gotta put up with it or change my car. It does bug me but if no one knows what it is then In gona have to get used to it. At least it aint broken......??

I've decided to put up with it to be honest - gave up trying to fix it and throwing money at it. Nothing's about to drop off and nothing's broken (that anyone can see) and with so many other cars doing it, it's gotta be a design flaw.

Well i wont worry anymore and just enjoy the drive with my music full blast. lol

This is an interesting thread because I've taken the car back several times to get the suspension checked out for fear of these kinds of problems. It is my abiding memory from when I test drove a friends 1.2 Furby when I was thinking of getting a Fabia that the road noise was particularly bad. It just makes me think that this VW platform has a poor suspension design in general.

i think you could be right regarding the VW platform design. Would be interesting to find out if the polo and ibiza owners suffer the same problems.

I say yes its a common platform design weakness problem, but the heavier and more powerful T and TDI engined cars will show these failings sooner that the lighter lower power engined cars. Luckily I've only got a 75PS petrol engined Polo 9N to worry about - and yes there are slight noises and/or feelings from below your feet - but I've given in and accepted that for that size of car it just comes with the territory. There simply is no money, weight or space to constrain all unwanted movement in a platform that was designed to sell for basic Fabia prices (exclude the VRS etc from that price - but it and all other platform users are stuck with what is).

Light small cars thump and bump - its just a fact of life.

I would suggest a thorough check of the inner track rods. The symtoms sounds almost identical to the noises of my car and it took a long time to bottom it out. A small amount of play made quite loud knocking noises particularly at slow speeds over bumpy ground. Checking/changing the inner track rod ball joint would therefore be my suggestion? Its cheaper than changing the sterring rack.

I've already replaced both full track rods as per my post above (you can't buy a single part of it such as the ends etc so you have to buy the full lot). Made no difference and meant I had to get my tracking done again. AND the parts weren't cheap. PITA. :(

I had exactly the same problem on my ol' Peugeot 405. Turned out to be the bearings at the top of the front struts that was the problem. They were all rusty and did not turn properly.

Don't know wether the design is the same on the Fabia, but it might be worth a thought.
