Hello everyone

Is it true that the cam belt needs to be replaced at 4 years old or 90000 miles on a Octavia diesel

I think you'll find it is 80K miles for the PD. Take a look in your service schedule booklet. Mine had it changed during a service at 78K.

A Search might not give the right answer!

From the back of a service sheet PD engines before 07/2003 60k after 08/2003 80k, but check with dealer.

My local Skoda dealer insists it every 4 years. No mileage specified, even though I may well have done over 100,000 miles by then. They did say that it is checked at every service.

Confused..

Mike

On the Octavia 2 its 80k, 4 years.

So that could be four years or 200k then?

The mileage is what the manufacture allows for the wear & tear on the belt, with a safety factor built in. The 'age' of the belt is that the material can degrade with age, again with a safety factor.

On the Octavia 2 its 80k, 4 years.

Not according to Saunders Abbott Skoda in Croydon!

Would it be wise to upgrade the water pump as said in other posts on this site?

Dave

I would for what it takes while your there.

As for the interval for the belt ask you dealer to print off the service sheet from ELSA, al the info is on there when it should be changed. BKC, BKD and BKP engine codes are 80k up until 08MY.

They are wrong then.

It is 4 years or 80k miles, whichever is sooner.

I trust what Ross says on this, because he knows.

That plus skoda customer services and the handbook say the same ;)

If somebody wants to leave it for 4 years regardless of mileage to save on a change, I suggest they budget for a replacement engine as it will probably be needed.

I had mine done at 60K, as was advised by my dealer however I had it done elsewhere.

The service book does NOT represent the current recomended service times, but instead those at the time the book was printed. These are constantly being revised so never take what it says as gospel.

Which is exactly what Saunders Abbot said to me & the latest bullitin they received from Skoda was revised to 4 years period, with it being checked at every service.

We don't have to agree with Skoda & get it done when we feel comfortable with it being done.

I'll be having mine done at the next service.

Hi All

It is actually 4 years or 74,564 miles on the PD. The handbook says 120,000km or 80,000 miles. When you convert the kilometres to miles it comes out as way less. All of the km to miles conversions are wrong. Which is why very few longlife services ever get to 20,000, its more like 18,000. My local dealer recommends following the km for things like cam belt.

My previous car never did the mileage to the first cambelt change, but they (and Haynes) added the 'or 4 years' later. Mine lasted 9 years. Luckily only 2 valves (of 8) bent, and I DIY so didn't cost me too much, but not worth risking for the amount of damage it can do.
