I see, older mercs used to be like that... is there not a firmware update that gives full functionality?

It could also be that the unit in their demo car had no postcode search at all. The five digit search is only available on the latest maps, so if the demo had V2 maps on it then the functionality would have been totally missing.

TBH, I have no problems using the 5 digit search. The way the rest of the input works is so simple.

Paul, its the map version thats the issue and thats why VAG reissued them from V2 to V3. The firmware already supports postcode entry.

The tester was complaining about the lack of full postcode search, so she was definitely using a v3 disk.

For me, the lack of 7 digit codes is a big problem. A lot of the places I visit down here don't have street names associated with them, so it's impossible to narrow down the destination once you've input the first 5 digits. I find I still have to carry my TomTom around to get to certain places.

Quite honestly, it's shocking that VAG won't cough up the money to license the full 7 digit postcode database. That's all this is about. I think it's even more shocking that BMW still only do 5 digit postcodes, even on the top of the range 7-series. Come on guys, cough up the money, and get this sorted!

The BMW boys have come up with an interesting solution, though. They have created a new POI category called 'Post Codes' that contains all the 7 digit codes. You then do a POI search instead, to set your destination. Given that the latest BMW system uses the same maps as the Columbus, I'm currently looking into making this work for the Skoda system. In fact, you can actually use the BMW disk, if you modify one file to make it look like the Skoda disk. Only one drawback, all the dealer POIs are BMW......

I've been nagging our account manager, and also the Skoda marketing manager about this. Trouble is, it would need to be a VAG wide decision, as none of the brands has a satnav system that does 7-digit postcodes (they all license the same data from NavTeq).

Bagpuss.

is there nothing that can be bought on ebay to sort this ?i had an old tom tom running on a PDA that only had 5 digits. i bought a CD on ebay for a couple of quid that had the 7 digit codes. i guess the issue is that my PDA could hook up to my PC and i could modify the files.

i have the same issue as your bagpus - lots of places dont have street names or house numbers. the 5 digit will get you to the street which could be 2 miles long. business address does not have a number so how do you find the place. at least now with a 7 digit it gets you close as the 2 mile long street will probably have 3/4 different postcodes. i am glad i am buying teh elegance for other reasons as the £1400 cost cannot be justified. the tom tom is annoying with cables everywhere but at least it gives 7 digit and mapshare is a useful feature. i think i might throw it in the glovebox just in case.
