These cars are very popular where I work, and people seem to like them very much. I must be missing something - I think they're horrible. They are not even quick. Am I missing something about them that others are seeing?

I see a bulky, plasticy, faux-hotrod with a tuneless, thirsty, poluting engine. The styling is tacky, tasteless and bland. The chrome wheels - well I don't know what to say.

As I said, they seem very popular - but why?

Anyone know?:confused::confused:

Spot on with your description there. I think they are for people who lack a certain part of the brain that alerts you to the presence of tat. They also probably think that they look kinda cool and funky, whereas most sane people see something very different.

These are the people who think that DFS and SCS have really lowered the price of their sofas and have got a bargain. They also believe that their car is a little piece of American automotive history

Still, each to their own. I drive a Skoda and think I look cool....:D

I had one as a hire car when I did a fly drive in Canada in 2003.

It was a 2.4 petrol auto with cruise. I actually ended up liking it and covered 2500km in 2 weeks and it was effortless.

I think although I liked it the novelty would wear off and the interior quality was poor. Reasonable boot and handled well enough on the roads on the other side of the pond.

I wouldn't want a U.K spec one and don't think they would be good on our roads but I can see the appeal, styling aside.

I don't dislike the external styling , but the interior is plastic tat and the engines aren't great at all

I agree - I've always thought they would be fun to drive for a week - in pretend gangster mode of course complete with violin case - but wouldn't want to own one for 2 - 3 years!

One round here has fake bullet holes stuck on.

OK, some more Cruiser thoughts (sounds dirty, that:P).

If they wanted to give it a vintage hotrodder look, why not give it some real chrome trim - the plastic bumpers just make it look like a people carrier. A fine bared grille and even some overriders would help.

Also, if it is appealing to the closet hotrod 'enthusiasts', why do the people buying them never drive them even remotely briskly? They are always in the slow lane and if I saw one blasting along even once I would think better of them...

I always thought of them as kind of retro rather than trying to be a hotrod.

The one I had wasn't a Classic trim so had body coloured bumpers with a little chrome, think it may have been something like a Touring Sport so spec was quite good really.

I think that the reason why they are driven slowly is that the U.K spec ones are very slow, I don't think they did the 2.4 litre here but the best available is the 2 litre.

I think they are Merc engines. May be wrong though.

I like the outside styling, but not the inside

Yes , they are retro styled but still a fairly practical design and are aimed at middle aged people who like a bit of classic americana.

They aren't targeted at racers - that's what the plymouth prowler was for.

I loved the idea of a hotrod styled hatchback, but then was disappointed when what they turned out looked more like a half risen loaf. It has shedloads of space inside, but then so does a wardrobe and you wouldn't want to be seen in one of those :)

When it was announced I was really interested, but when I saw it in the flash, I felt let down. I felt it was a wasted opportunity and it could have been so much better.

Perhaps it is targeted at the middle aged practical type who wants a bit of style, but even the slowest middle aged person enjoys a nice engine note and good fuel economy. The engine in the Cruiser grinds and is not economic.

Dont think I'd ever buy anything made by Chrysler

pt cruiser, one word PROPER UGLY. ok that was two... most people i know who have them have kids so maybe thats got something to do with it??

My boss will be driving around in a convertible one tomorrow, which I believe is yellow to boot. For some obscure reason the garage he uses has one as a courtesy car.

He is REALLY looking forward to that :D:D:D

Convertible PT cruiser = WW2 Gestapo staff car

PT cruiser in black... look out here comes the ant-hill mob.....

PT cruiser in black... look out here comes the ant-hill mob.....

Saw a black with darkened windows ( thought it was a hearse ) wondered if there was a coffin in the back.

Maybe they bought them because they simply like them.

Which I admire far more than buying cars that you think other people must see you in.

(having had a look in one...the interior does look poor...but then again I hate interiors with i-drives,screens,mp3 however good they are)

I absolutely can't stand them :thumbdwn:

Have to agree on that though:D
