Purple paint for plastic bits?

Featured Replies

Tried searching but cant find this anywhere

Am after "cadburys" purple paint for door handles and grille surround that is not metalic, just gloss purple. (and yes i have been told it'll look crap .... if i dont like it well then i will just keep spraying different colours untill i do like it... tis only paint)

Not totaly sure what I am lookin for, does it gotta be car paint or can i just go to hobbycraft?

Go to a local motor-factors/Halfords and take a look through the colour charts

mmmm..... cadburys....

If you're looking for a "straight" (non-metallic) purple, and can get to a model shop, Humbrol and Tamiya both do shades that might suit in small tins. Otherwise, as Andrew says, look in Halfrauds, but I think other than Nissan and V@*xh@11 no-one's done a straight purple since the 1970s.

Yea I have seen corsa's in the purple I want, halfords dont have it tho :( only a metalic purple for a ford -which i dont really want metalic handles

How much more difficult is it to get an even finish with a tin of paint than spraying if i go for that option instead of aerosol?

Could you not just eat lots of chocolate and then wrap the required parts in the purple foil?

The worrying thing is that I did actually wonder if I could perhaps do something along those lines with my lights and use the plasticy stuff so they will light up purple...

Can't see any reason not to, but as you earlier said , 'tis only paint, if it doesn't work try another product.

The hard part will be finding out what the V@*xh@11 colour is called (not least because it's not purple; I can remember that), but a bigger Halfrauds will mix up a spray can given the right colour name.

As for how easy it would be getting an even finish with a brush, it's a bit "it depends" I'm afraid. Factors than need considering include how new the paint is, how well it covers (and Humbrol's QC isn't what it used to be between batches), what the surface is, how good the preparation is, how big the brush is (easier to get an even finish with a 1/4" chisel brush than the one in a touchup pot or a nail varnish)...

Get the colour code from said car, or a Vx dealer, and call your nearest superstore to check they have the components in stock to mix it. Last time I checked it was £7.99 for a touch up and £10.99 for an aerosol... expensive, but at least it's the correct colour.

Don't forget you'll need to use plastic primer if you're spraying plastic.

We can, as I stated above (before I read your post :o) although it's more accurate off the code.

No obvious way you'd know this, but MissP has a Skoda, not a V@*xh@11.

Yes, so how do you get the "correct paint code" for a car you don't own? There can be several codes for the same "colour name", as I'm sure you know.

That has given me an idea though.

MissP, are you trying to colour code your handles to your bodywork? If so, a competent Skoda dealer should be able to identify the correct paint code for your car, and even supply a rattle can (by special order). Expect to be asked for the chassis number though.

F it, just take it to a decent body shop and ask them for a dark flat purple.

They will prime it, paint it and generally do a good job and probably for not much more than you would be paying for the paint and the primer never mind your time.

:+1: for Cheeze, but:

Well, it was more if MissP knew someone with the correct colour car... but of course a colour code can come from the dealer if you know the model/approximate year of car.

The exact paint code is obviously of no relevance here unless she is trying to match the plastics to her paintwork.

T'other half would kill me if I did that! If i make him go find the paint tho he'll say no not that colour - If i already have the paint... well then he cant really refuse can he :D

I've ordered a couple of variations of purple off that site anyway so we'll see what that turns out like. I am not fussed TBH, will keep redoing it untill i am happy with it

Cheers guys:thumbup:

The Cosra purple (the one used in the early 90's) is called rainbow blue if you (or they) did not know.

I'm sure an independant bodyshop would be able to point you in the direction of someone who would be able to mix the paint up for you and stick it in a spray can. That way you could get close to the cadbury purple.

Rainbow Blue you say?

I'll look into this, thanks.

I've just had a thought for getting a sensible quantity of an exact match for the OP.

Go to these guys site, get their address (Tewkesbury), take a sample of the colour you want, and ask them if Zero can do an exact match.

I would think with a good key, some plastic primer and a clear top coat this would work well.

ooo ooo thanks guys!!! Like both those thoughts, Ross I LOVE that colour! Still not totally decided what it is i am paintin tho. Door handles deffo, cant decide on grille purple black surround or other way around, wanna do brake drums and possibly arch liners too I think. Just some subtle bits.

Well those paint cans are only very small as they are meant for rc car bodies. Bonus is they are meant for plastic, drawback is they are meant for polycarbonate bodies that are painted on the inside so thus dont have a shine to them. However a clear coat and polish would sort that.
