What dampers do I need?

Featured Replies

My 107k Skoda Octavia 1.8t 4x4 Estate, 2002, is on it's original dampers so I think it would be good to get some replacements. I'll buy them myself and ask local garage to fit them.

Anyone recommend what model I need and where to get them from as I haven't had any success searching on Google. Cheap brand is fine as this car only (now) covers 4-5k miles per year.

Thanks.

I have just installed Koni FSD's. Just a bit more expensive than original, but much, much better! VERY satisfied!

Work grat with OEM springs.

Avoid Koni Sports - very durable but much too hard even at full soft setting.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm just after cheap standard dampers rather than lowering it as I have another car, and the Skoda is just a [very tired] hack for the station, dog, shopping etc.

Any other suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

Hi again!

First - Koni FSD's do not lower the car, but you can lower the car with up to 35mm shorter springs if you should want to. But this is quite normal and not unique to Koni FSD's. But as I said before - my experience with Koni FSD's are just positive.

Octy's are well known for being a bit underdamped, especially in the front. Before - when driving over speedbumps, my car nose-dived. Now it goes over completely "flat".:)

The original dampers on your Octy are from Sachs. Sachs Super Touring series might be a adequate alternative, being a premium quality OEM-damper.

If your original damper is an oil damper, the Super Touring will also be this. If gas-pressurised, the Super Touring will also be this. But again - better quality than OEM. This according to Sachs.

When I changed, I discovered that my car, a 2000-model 1,6 Estate had oil-dampers in the front and gas-pressurised in the rear - originally.

Whatever you chose - don't go for cheap dampers. You will soon regret that. Go for good quality dampers, but buy them at a good price!:)
