140 pd or 170 cr

Featured Replies

my dad is looking to replace his 130 comfort with the new model and is undecided which to go for, it will be elegance trim so any opinions welcome as to which he should go for would be most appreciated folks, i.e i read autocar had probs with their dpf on their vrs octy but im sure the 140 has a dpf too, it got choked up 5 times i think they said due to short journeys and local driving iirc. any pointers would be great.

Most commentators seem to prefer the common rail engine as it's quieter and has a smoother power delivery, though the sudden surge of power with the PD will always have its fans. The 170 is more powerful too of course which helps as the Superb is a big car.

I've driven the 170 Elegance and it's very refined, though this may be partly the car in general. I must say it didn't actually feel that quick, but perhaps that was the DSG gearbox and the overall refinement of the car. Personally i think the coarseness of the PD 140 is overstated and it's by no means a weak engine. Your dad wants to test drive them back to back: I'm sure he'll prefer the 170CR, but it ultimately depends if more refinement and a bit more power is worth the £900 difference!

One last thought: dealers tend to have the 170 in stock so it may well be easier to cut a deal on one of those over a factory order.

I hope this helps.

I'd suggest the 170 CR, as come resale time, even though its £900 more new, it will be a lot easier to shift as it will have the more desirable engine.

thanks mate, thats exactly what im/he is looking for. he will be after a manual , i tried to get him to look at the dsg but hes old school and wont go near it lol. so you havent heard of any probs with the diesel particulate filter then?

resale i should mention wont be an issue as its a taxi so itll be worthless when its finished, his current one is over 200k but immaculate but i dont think he will get anything for it coem trade in. :(

The CR is a very nice engine to drive. Would be my bet.

Isn't the CR more refined and produces less of the stuff that the DPF absorbs?

I'd go with the newer technology which seems to have moved diesel on a notch.

Unfortunately the Deisel Particulate Filter is still a problem with the 170 CR.

is it clogging up with town driving fofos?

Short town runs, stopping and starting etc, but if your dad gives it a fifteen - twenty minute run at around 1800 - 2000 rpm once every three weeks are so on the motorway to burn off the gasses he shouldn't have a problem.

Probably ty=thank you

If it's intended use is as a taxi, then why not just selct the dependable 1.9Tdi 105 and save some money?

my dad wants it as comfotable as possible( not saying the 105 isnt comfy), hes 63 and wants to be comfy in the long hours hes in the car and likes the nicer extras such as bi xenons and heated seats and the built in nav, and the 170 isnt much worse on fuel according to the brochure and he likes to have a wee bit of grunt which the 105 certainly wont have in such a large car.

buy a petrol then you dont have to worry about ars*ing about clearing the DPF !!

Don't PX it, as you say they will want to give £500 for it, stick it in the paper for a reasonable price and get £1500 off the screen of the new one.

hes been offered by a friend £2k which isnt bad considering its mileage, it really is tidy though and looks more like 80k than 200k +. as for petrol, he defo wants a diesel, theres no converting him :) thanks again all for the replys, ill let him read them soon as he gets a minute.

touchwood i havent had the dpf light come up on my superb in the 2yrs we've almost had it......and it does a lot of local journeys as my wife is a carer...i have noticed an unusual smell when engine is running, but that was the dpf being cleaned i was told....but we do give the car an occasional blast on motorway which i feel helps keep the light at bay...the car being the 140bhp pd engine i am more than happy with the punch of acceleration...think i would be a little dissapointed with the 170bhp superb as im told although its a touch more powerful, it lacks the punch the 140 produces
