ARB's, Strut braces, springs, baffled :)

Featured Replies

I know how the Anti roll bars work on a car; I guess its kind of common sense... But to the strut braces work? Is there any noticeable difference with having one? Would it be worth the time to make one up and get an Anti roll bar on with it?

Also i'm told many things about chopping springs. I know some people swear by it and some people wouldn't get in a car with them on it. What I want to know is if it’s done sensibly (in the sense that the car isn’t scraping the floor) is it a safe modification, or not? The only springs I have been able to source are 35mm drops, and I would like to go a bit lower than that, maybe between 40-50mm.

I’m also interested in wheel spacers, I like the look when the wheels don’t seem to be sat inside the arches, more flush with them, or just at least closer to, namely on the back of the car. Would they cause any undesirable driving conditions or are they any good?

What are your suggestions?

get a strut brace off a scrapped felicia. Most had them to my knowledge.

I wouldnt chop springs personally as getting them right could prove a nightmare!! 35mm should be decent enough drop i would have thought

I know on some of these posts people have had problems with spacers in getting various alloys on. I reckon one dropped slightly your car will probably look pretty decent with the standard alloys on.

I don't understand why VAG put those steel golf wheels on the felicia as they look lost!! The Favorit had better wheels

I think this probably explains strut braces well enough

Fitting a strut brace and performance benefits

"Strut your funky stuff"

Strut bracesThink of a car like a shoebox with no lid. It will flex as you twist it and this is not good for handling.

You might be thinking that a car is made of metal and is not subject to this flexing.

The actual requirement for doors and glass substantially reduce the rigidity of the car, but you can address this problem yourself.

In a convertible or cabriolet this flexing is a more exaggerated problem as there is no roof to strengthen the car, as many TorqueCars owners can testify.

A strut brace is a sturdy metal bar which connects the top of the strut towers (suspension pillars) together. This reduces the flexing and twisting of the body, under heavy cornering, and on roads with steep cambers.

Strut braces will reduce body flexing allowing better cornering and enhanced driver feedback.

Combined with a roll cage a very rigid car can be created. The front of the car is more subject to flexing than the rear, so most people fitness strut brace in the front of the car.

The strut braces need to be precision made, and many allow fine tuning adjustment after fitting. They need to be a strong and light, so many are constructed from aluminium or carbon fibre, but steel rods are also suitable.

When fitted as strut brace will improve the handling of the car by maintaining the angles in the suspension geometry, even under heavy load. You will also get better feedback from the chassis, and cornering grip will be greatly increased.

Have considered getting hold of a felicia strut brace but not managed to yet.

fwiw i think you'd be better off trying to put a brace on the bottom somwhow

why on the bottom? I would of thought the most flex would of been reduced by adding a brace to the top of the struts? Do Fellys have ARB's as standard? If they do would they fit the fav? Or would they need some modification?

From what I have read I believe to fit an Arb to a Favorit you need to use Felicia wishbones which have some sort of holes for the arb brackets to fit to, and need to drill some holes in the front subframe to accommodate the brackets.

Someone has done it over on www.skoda-forum.com although direct links to topics don't work somehow

Here's the pictures from the thread anyway

I've always wanted to fit a strut brace in a Fav but never got round to it. However, the reputation strut braces have for improving handling goes back to the days of steering box mechanisms rather than rack and pinion. With a box, the brace significantly reduces the tendency of the front wheels to differ in direction as the front of the car twists.
